Ask steemit? Seed Vault challenge?

in #homesteading7 years ago

This question goes out to all the homesteaders and Preppers. I'm sure all of us have seen seed vaults that you can put away in case s*** hits the fan. Has anyone actually tried planting what is in the vault? Not only just planting it but planting it like s*** did hit the fan?

I'm going to give it a go and plant a seed Vault. Just like s*** hit the fan. It would be cool if we could get a few of us doing it that way we can see different results in different places. Keep your eye out for the next seed Vault post! It will be titled appropriately and tagged seed Vault challenge

Also if you could Resteem this so other Preppers and homesteaders could see it that would be awesome!

I bought a similar seed setup close to 20 years ago. Kept them around for around 15 years, all still sealed in the little metalized bags they came in. Ended up giving most of them to my brother because he had plenty of land to plant in. Germination rates were still plenty good enough to allow him to grow a very large garden. Different seeds were different but almost all of them were better than 50% germination after 15 years of storage.

That's awesome! Sounds encouraging. That bucket o seeds is about 2 years old.

What seeds do you get in it?

cabbage, squash, corn, melon, Tomatoes, radish, peppers, carrots, lettuce, kale, mustard, spinach, Swiss chard, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cucumber, onion, pumpkin, peas, bush, beans, turnips, beets, oats and wheat.😁

Had to go to my part time job right after I posted this. When I get home I'll pop it open and let you know what's inside.

I haven’t bought one of these but have thought about it. Looking forward to see what happens.

Thank you @hebrewhousewife. I'm looking forward to it also.

Most seeds will keep for many years in the freezer. We use most of our own seeds and take seeds out of our vault ever year and add some to.
