Ever since the invention of the gun, men have been trying to perfect the bullet proof vest. Original vests looked more like medieval armor and were just as uncomfortable. Some vests were so heavy that they were impractical. By the early 1900s, a different type of vest came into fashion.
Criminal gangs began to make their own bullet proof vests. Unlike earlier vest models, these vests were made out of cloth and were padded with cotton. They were fairly comfortable to wear and they could absorb handgun rounds. This caused problems for law enforcement who had to invent more powerful bullets to take down the criminals.
This vest weighed 11 lb (5.0 kg), fit close to the body, and was considered more comfortable.
