Some beers purchased in London last month...
Tursday 12th in Lord Moon of the Mall

Phoenix Navvy

Phoenix are a generally reliable brewer - nothing flashy but alway acceptable. This was my first pint of Navvy as far as I recall and it won't be my last. A traditional bitter - lots of body and a nutty caramel taste that us very more-ish. Look at the lace on that glass - it's a good thick ale that made that.

Sambrook's After Nine

Never again. I know from experience not buy a pint of any 'chocolate' or 'coffee' beer because although the first mouthful is lovely, after about 2/3 of a pint I've had enough. This one was different. The young Australian lady who served me the drink cracked up as I pulled a face and swore: "That's ghastly!" It was too sweet and had a hint of sulphur. I forced it down on principle.
I had a 'Kendal Mint Cake' liqueur last year which actually tasted like an After Eight mint, and was really nice. Especially over ice cream. Weirdly, if it was chilled it became very metallic. These artificial alcohol flavourings are tricky, it seems.

Later that night in the Hole in The Wall at Waterloo Station...

Sambrook's Smackdown

A very nice red ale, with more body than most reds. Probably my favourite of the Sambrook's range, and reassuring after the shock of earlier in the evening.

Friday 22nd at The William Morris, Hammersmith (in preparation for Blue Öyster Cult).

Inveralmond Bàrd

Exactly as the tasting notes describe. There was a slight sulphur taste, though - but not enough to reduce the enjoyment. I do like Scottish beers, unless the words 'Tennants' or 'McEwens' are involved. Not had anything from this brewer before, but will keep an eye out for more.

Twickenham Grandstand

Punches above its weight. Good solid beer, not a million miles from London Pride. I used to live in Twickenham, many years ago. Now I think it has two breweries. The same brewery's 'Naked Ladies' (named after the statues in the garden of Marble Hill House, where teenagers go to have sex in the summer) is a really good light session beer.

Finally, the carpet at The William Morris. Truly, truly horrible...

Those shoes are pretty dreadful as well, come to think of it.
