Misadaptation

-Did you see that?
-What?
-There’s a fern growing up under the door’s frame.
-A fern? Really?
-Yes, and it looks fantastic, as if it were growing in a fancy fertilized pot.
-I can’t believe it. Finally we get something other than weed popping out of those cracks. Would it be safe to uproot it and transplant it onto a pot?

He thought about the fern forests he saw when he was growing up. A kid could easily hide standing up behind those tall ferns easily. Of course, he was little, but still, those were big ferns. Those plants were meant for space and dirt, not a concrete prison that barely let it breath through a tiny crevice.

-It should. Let’s let it grow a bit more and when it is strong enough to survive the pull, I’ll transplant it.

They let it grow a couple of weeks more. It looks so remarkable that several neighbors had commented how cool they had ferns growing out of the door’s frame’s crack.

When it got big enough that it started to look intrusive, out of place, he pulled it out and transplanted it onto a recently fertilized pot; big enough for the fern to grow as wild as it pleased.

A week later the damn thing was as dry as the desert.

So much for fertilized ground and room to grow. Some things are just fine the way they are.
