September 18, 1960: Fidel Castro in the US

Castro arrives in New York

An important day in history when Fidel Castro arrived in New York City as the head of the Cuban delegation to the United Nations. This was before Castro officially declared to be a communist (this happend in 1961) but his NY visit was another reason the relations between the United States and Cuba did not really improve. Since Fidel took the power in Cuba he implemented policies to nationalize US investments and companies on his island. A sensation of his visit was the stay in a Harlem hotel with his entire team where he met African-American leaders. One week later he did attack the US for their Latam politics, to him this was imperialism in an aggressive manner. In a nutshell this September trip is remembered as the final breaking point in relations between cuba and the US.

Castro making it to NYC is truly something worth remembering, especially at this time. To see such an anti-American entity liberally come and go and then continue to be the exact opposite. Wonder how Cuba has one of the best public health care systems in the world when they are so anti money. weird.

New to me they have a working health care system

We hated this Guy... obviously due to propaganda...Love seeing a new perspective to world history

Thanks - yes there are always different perspectives
