What is Obesity? Explain it.

Obesity is the state of being obese as a result of an excess of body fat. Obese refers to extremely overweight, particularly weighing above 20% for men or 25% for women over their optimal weight determined by height and build or having a body mass index over 30 kg/m2.

Therefore, obesity is a medical condition that is characterized by immoderate or excessive body fat, which can negatively affect health. It's usually measured by body mass index (BMI), having a BMI of 30 or above indicating obesity.

Obesity can be hereditary in which genetic factors play a significant role; it can also be dietary-based as a result of the consumption of high-calorie foods as well as drinks that lead to a gain of weight.

Furthermore, being physically inactive, such as a sedentary lifestyle, can encourage obesity, just as the risk of some chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and most cancers are increased by obesity.

Obesity can be prevented or managed through regular exercise by engaging in physical activities like running, walking, or swimming. Practicing a healthy diet by concentrating on whole, nutrient-dense food can be of great help, as well as making changes in lifestyle by making sustainable changes to everyday habits.


Explain three lifestyles that lead to obesity.

The three lifestyles that I would want to point out that contribute to obesity are:

1. Sedentary Lifestyle

A lifestyle that has little to no engagement in physical activity can result in weight gain as well as obesity. This can include:

  • Spending a reasonable fraction of the day sitting or inactive
  • Lack of physical activity or exercise
  • Protracted screen time
2. Unhealthy Eating Habits

Consumption of foods that are high-calorie, high-fat, and high-sugar in nature can seriously contribute to obesity. This can may include:

  • Consuming processed and packaged foods
  • Eating sugary drinks and snacks
  • binge eating or overeating
3. Poor Sleep and Stress Management

Insufficient sleep, as well as chronic stress, can throw hormones that regulate hunger and fullness into confusion or disorder, giving rise to overeating and weight gain. This may include:

  • Insomnia or irregular sleep patterns
  • Diuturnal stress and anxiety
  • Usage of food as a coping mechanism for emotional stress

How can stress and lack of sleep lead to obesity?

In several ways, stress and lack of sleep can lead to obesity:

Combined Effects

  1. Weight gain: Chronic stress and sleep deprivation can result in weight gain as well as obesity over time.
  2. Metabolic changes: These two factors can as well contribute to metabolic changes, heightening the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

What is BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a measurement used for assessing weight status, which is calculated by dividing weight (measured in kilograms) by height (measured in meters) squared.

How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²

The Ranges of BMI
  1. Underweight: Where BMI < 18.5
  2. Normal weight: Where BMI = 18.5 — 24.9
  3. Overweight: Where BMI = 25 — 29.9
  4. Obese: Where BMI ≥ 30

It is important to note that while BMI makes provision for a general indication of weight status, it has limitations like not accounting for body composition or muscle mass.

My height = 1.74 m²
My weight = 70kg
BMI = w/h = 70kg/1.74m²
BMI = 40.2kg/m²

From the calculation, my BMI is 40.2kg/m², which, if compared with the ranges of BMI, falls in the range of ≥ 30. Funnily, this is indicating obesity.
