Going Cross Eyed for 3D Sight

//Mind and Vision//

Our minds are ever so powerful and it’s amazing what one can achieve when focusing, training and applying mental effort to certain goals and objectives. Sometimes we look at images as a matter of perspective, stereoscopic imagery is a cool method used to create and view 3D images without additional equipment. Instead of wearing glasses, you simply cross your eyes to blend a set of images to form a new 3D image. Admittedly, it’s not something I feel entirely comfortable with but relaxing and crossing your eyes are the key to entering the realm of three-dimensional goodness.

//Myth or Risk//

Having tried this effect a few times, it certainly feels strange and I am ever conscious about straining my eyes. My parents would always tell me to never cross my eyes, they might stay that way! We of course look at things in a more logical and scientific way, it’s simply a myth. Eye muscles can feel strain and fatigue but chances of your eyes remaining crossed are slim to none. There are several conditions that can cause permanent cross eye or similar misalignment. The collective term for this is strabismus, muscles of each eye work independently and will be able to view two items in different locations simultaneously.

//Strain and Train//

Interestingly, viewing such images can be used as a form of eye exercise. I am an advocate of the gym, but it was my first-time discovering eye workouts. While there are no conclusive scientific studies that show exercises can be used to correct eyesight issues, they can strengthen the eye muscles and alleviate eye strain. For those who spend countless hours on their computer screens, blogging away or coding into the next decade, an eye exercise or two may not be a bad idea. Eye doctors may prescribe specific strengthening exercises to relieve conditions or assist a structured treatment programme.

Eye health is an interesting field and I will be taking a deeper looking into emerging techniques that help to improve eyesight in the modern day. For now, check out this cool 3D video, no glasses required!
