Portrait Study | Charcoal Drawing
It's been years since I made a portrait using charcoal pencils and it seems like I am slowly forgetting how to use it. lol. I find it quite hard to work on it, especially that I am anxious that I might make mistakes and I can't make clean erasures..
Right now, I decided to make a portrait of my cousin. Here is the process on how I made it.
Materials Used
Graphite Pencil
Charcoal Pencils
Kneaded Eraser
Sandpaper
Paintbrush
Cotton
Blending Stump
Contour Line Drawing
First, I drew the contour line of the subject.
Applying Charcoal Powder
Then I applied the charcoal powder using a paint brush and a cotton. The sharp lines are applied using a flat brush and the very soft shade is applied using a cotton. I also distinguished the light and dark for tonal value.
Enhancing the Lines
In this part, I used the charcoal pencil to enhance the lines and blended it using a blending stump. I also added more charcoal to enhance the shadows. I just add it slowly so I would be able to make the erasures easier and to have a soft blend.
Adding More Charcoal
I added more charcoal powder to make the subject darker.
Enhancing the Tonal Value
I added more charcoal powder for the shadow. Then I used the This is also the part that I made some corrections with the proportions.
Adding Finishing Touches
That is the process and I hope to improve next time. Thank you for stopping by!
