Flags Everywhere!! Do You Need to Worry About Getting Flagged?

in #steem9 years ago

When you see people talking about flag controversies, it can get scary. A lot of minnows and even dolphins are terrified by the idea of an angry whale squashing their rewards.

There’s a good reason to be afraid of that. After all we work hard for our steem and if you end up under the thumb of a strong flag campaign, it’ll eliminate your upcoming earnings. Flags can’t touch your SP, savings, or liquid steem/SBDs.

What they can do is tank your reputation. As somebody who has worked hard to make it towards the top of the reputation pyramid (rank #441 as of this post), I know how much time it takes to earn your rep. That’s a scary thought.

The plus side is that you don’t really need to worry about getting flagged. Most people who are trying to do right by steem won’t receive too many flags.

How to Avoid Flags

Here are a few guidelines you can follow if you are paranoid about getting flags.

(1) Post less than 4 times per day.

This only applies to full topics, not comments. It’s unlikely that you will earn many additional rewards on your 4th or 5+ post of the day. Put that energy into a consistent 2-3 posts per day and you won’t get flagged for spamming.

(2) Only Original Content

Plagiarism is one of the most common ways that people get flagged. It’s hard to recover your reputation, literally and figuratively, if you get caught stealing. Never do it.

(3) Avoid Drama

I like to say that it’s best to leave whale drama for the whales. If you don’t have hundreds of thousands of SP at your disposal, why get worked up about it? You might piss people off and you don’t have any direct influence on the situation. It’s best to let people handle their own drama, especially if lots of SP is involved.

(4) Help Other People

Finally, help other people in the steem ecosystem. This is a basic way to build a good name for yourself from the start. When you are a respected member of the community, you are way less luckily to end up getting hit with flags out of nowhere.

Final Thoughts

Just be a good person and help other steemians, that’s the main thing. I’ve personally never had a flag issue and I hope you won’t either.

While there is a lot of FUD going on regarding the flag situation, the truth is that 99% of steemians never have a problem with flagging. If you work hard and focus on good content you’ll probably be fine. Don’t be afraid.

What’s your opinion on flagging on steem?

Sort:

I fully agree that it's best to chill out and not constantly worry about flagging.

I've only been flagged a few times, and each time more votes brought my posts back to light.

But the other side to this that you probably won't see much of yourself because you are posting about non controversial subjects, is flagging for censorship.

I've been flagged for posts about vaccinations and zionism, but crypto posts just don't get that response. Some subjects are verbotten...

(1) Post less than 4 times per day.
nope..that's right out...I average more than twice that. In fact I rank in the top 30 on steemit for the number of post.

(3) Avoid Drama
nope..not that neither...I thrive on controversy.
you want to argue?
I'm your man...I'll cuss and discuss many things with you until the cows come home.
Politics and technology mostly

You don't seem the like kind of guy to avoid controversy lol

nope
all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to not do anything.

It would be really scary to get flagged. I try to do my best on my posts and just mind my own business and be nice to people and treat people with respect.
Thanks for the tips, it's always good to have that in mind.

You are welcome. It's unlikely that you'd get flagged so don't worry too much about it

The hit on your reputation is the hardest to recover from. Since I was a target in the last flag wars I’ve found it really hard to build my reputation back up.

Sorry to hear that Stephen, that is rough. Reputation takes forever to build up.

Stay out of the drama and things will pass by. I like where your head is at on this subject. Simple solutions that involve a little work. Good things come to those who do good. Keep on keepin on man!!

"Good things come to those who do good" yea!

I feel that instead of fighting about flags and upvotes, people need to consider a real problem of steemit. Trending and hot sections don't work as they should and that creates real problems for minnows to rank high.
I think we need to talk more about it and search for possible solutions.
