📺FREEZE ALL MOTOR FUNCTIONS: WestWorld is Back!

WESTWORLD is back for a second season. Discuss here with spoilers!

QUICK RECAP

We left season 1 right when the replicants of Westworld broke free from their chains (aka narratives) and started shooting the assembled board of Delos, the company in charge with the parks where the humans of the near-distant future can live a fantasy of their choice. We had a faint glimpse of some other parks at the end of last season, but we come back right where we left, in the "westworld"... but not exactly WHEN we left.

As you recall, BERNARD had been tragically outed as a "host" himself. He wakes up on a beach more than two weeks after the Delos board massacre with his memories quite muddled, and is found by a military escort which has been sent to rescue what and who can be saved. Thankfully for him, they have no idea either that he is a host, so they take care of him and he accompanies them to try to find out the others and find out what happened. However, Bernard's memories are confused. He vaguely recalls escaping from the massacre with Charlotte Hale, a Delos executive who has some dark agenda involving the host called "Peter Abernathy". She precisely says that Delos won't send help before she can find this host and send his datas out. Why?

Meanwhile, we can see that DOLORES has fared much better. Not content to shoot her master and creator FORD in the head and to unleash the forces of chaos on the park, she seems to have spent quite a lot of time and effort chasing and butchering the remaining humans trying to escape. At last, she seems to realize that TEDDY is quite her type of man, and she reveals to him her ambition, which goes way beyond the park! She declares quite frankly that her goal is to conquer the human world out of it, probably aware that the Humans will never allow such aberration to coexist with them. Let me say right there and then: Go Dolores!

A much more relatable narrative is the one for Maeve, played with awesome cheekiness and deadpan humour by Thandie Newton. She had the opportunity to escape from the park, but instead chose to stay, at what was possibly the worst moment ever, but her goal is pure and admirable: she wants to find a girl, her little girl, even though Lee Sizemore (the creative in charge of the narratives) reminds her that she was just programmed to love and care for that little girl. Of course, Lee Sizemore is quickly reminded to shut up and do as he is told (even to strip off) if he wants a chance to stay alive around her and HECTOR.

Last but not least, The MAN IN BLACK himself has survived the massacre, rather unimpressively hiding under a pile of bodies but he quickly proves that he has not lost any of his skills and as soon as he has dispatched two hosts and mended his injuries he seems to really relish the idea to face the mess he finds himself in: the stakes are now REAL!

CONCLUSION

A provoking episode, whose main motto seems to be "evolution": it promises a lot and shows that this second season will fire in all directions. We are even given (potentially) a vision of how everything will end at the end of the season. I don't think it warranted such a long episode though and would have gained to stay under one hour to keep everything neat and tidy. However, it would not be Westworld if it was not overblown and little tiny bit too pretentious (or ambitious) for its own sake.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

  • I learned during that episode that the replicants are not 100% biological: they have actually a hard-drive embedded in their skull. Brains prove to be the limit of Ford's genius. Who would have known?
  • Anyone has any clue who is Peter Abernathy and why Charlotte is so adamant to get him back?
  • What Delos think they can achieve with the information collected from the hosts?
  • Could Dolores be looking for Peter Abernathy as well?
  • I think there is something fishy with Ashley Stubbs, the chief of security. Last time we saw him he was captured by Indian hosts prior to the massacre and now shows up right next to Bernard? Is he a host too or has he been replaced by a host?
  • Is it Teddy who we see floating in the sea at the end of the episode?
  • When the Man in Black kills "little Ford", has Ford delivered his last words or could he have uploaded his memories and mind into a string of different hosts to admire the mess he has unleashed on the park?
  • WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT EPISODE? WHAT CAUGHT YOUR EYE? ANY THEORY ABOUT WHERE THINGS ARE GOING?

I actually read the book THE TERROR (by Dan Simmons) from which the series you watch is adapted! And the book was ab-so-lu-te-ly gripping and terrifying! :-D
