If my memory serves me.right, it is to stop the descendants of priests from inheriting church property. There was once a time where priests can marry and it was a disaster.
Corruption among the clergy was rampant at that time and priests would blatantly steal from the church and on of the easiest way to do this is to have your children inherit them.
