Vincent van Gogh’s art appeals to a wide range of audiences, from Starry Night (1889) to immersive, Impressionist-themed light displays. Even lesser-known works by the well-known Dutch artist are in high demand. According to Emilie Gordenker, director of the Van Gogh Museum, it’s quite unusual for a brand-new job to be ascribed to him, since art historians have exhaustively cataloged the painter’s output.
As a result, when a Dutch family approached the museum and asked staff to examine an anonymous picture, it came as “a great surprise” to senior scientist Teio Meenendorp, who tells Reuters that the depiction was a clearly recognizable work by van Gogh.
In the October edition of the Burlington magazine, the academic who spearheaded the charge to confirm the job published his findings. According to Mike Corder of the Associated Press (AP), the illustration is currently on display at the Amsterdam museum, where it is being displayed publicly for the first time.
Van Gogh drew the picture on a 19-by-12-inch sheaf of watercolor paper using a carpenter’s pencil. According to Mark Brown of the Guardian, he smoothed out lighter portions of the make-up using bread pellets on the rougher surface, then used a fixative made from milk and water to further emphasize the dark pencil strokes.
Experts determined that the painting was created in November 1882, when van Gogh detailed his progress in letters to his brother Theo and also fellow musician Anthon van Rappard. According to Martin Bailey of the Art Paper, the Stylist was “clearly pleased” with the arrangement, and made a lithograph of the subject just a few days later.
