Located within the retirement community of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Memorial Hospital West (MHW) is growing dramatically and is in need of additional treatment spaces. With 300 beds, the facility is severely undersized, constantly keeping roughly 45 emergency department patients waiting for a bed.

MHW selected GS&P to design a 58,000-square-foot addition including a new 25,000-square-foot emergency department. The new 59-bed emergency department is an open race track design located adjacent to the surgery and radiology departments for better patient throughput. Prior to this project, Memorial Hospital West’s emergency department handled approximately 65,000 annual visits and was the second-largest of the existing three hospitals in the Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale area. Following project completion, the emergency department is capable of accommodating 85,000 to 90,000 visits.

While the project goal was the addition of treatment spaces, the design goal of the new addition was to help enhance and modernize the appearance of the hospital. The building is situated in a very prominent location and is the first building visitors see on the campus from the main driveway entry. As part of the enhanced design, GS&P added significantly-sized windows, allowing a wealth of sunlight into the treatment and waiting areas.

The 43,000-square-foot surgery department is also being renovated by GS&P as part of the overall project.

Due in part to the success of the emergency department's renovations, MHW has called upon GS&P to design the addition of the South Bed Tower. Approximately 41,000 square feet will be added to the existing hospital with two nursing unit floors constructed above the existing South Entry canopy. The project will accommodate
