I've Got Upvote Madness! (a noobs guide to maximizing your upvote) [vlarticle #3]

in #steemit7 years ago

It's not just about making you more money, it's about making the best Steemit we can.

Upvoting is arguable one of the most important things a curator can do on Steemit (along with commenting). It's a way to show financial and moral support to the creators of good content! Increasing it's popularity and gaining it exposure. Which is the essence of Steemit.

So it makes sense that if you want to be successful on Steemit, whatever success might be to you, it's pretty important you understand the upvoting system.

I only joined Steemed 9 days ago, and in that time I've learned a lot about how the platform works, and I've committed some pretty serious rookie mistakes.

This post covers the No. 1 noob error I've made so far (aside from getting my hopes up that a post will do well). It was pointed out to me in the comments section by @satoshimoto in this post https://steemit.com/blog/@olmech/a-steemit-observation-on-followers. Thanks again mate!

So what was the mistake?

Dishing out too much love!

Check the side panel for you're Steemit voting power.

My upvote, which is worth only $0.02, is actually worth only 31.7% of that due to my voting power. So my vote is worth basically nothing to the content creator.

Why does this matter?

You might ask yourself "so what?", the person I'm curating gets 69.3% (in my case) less money. How is that my problem.

Firstly, if you do think this way you're a jerk. Secondly,

You miss out on 69.3% of your curation rewards as well!

I think a heap of minnows are making this mistake. Not only does it reduce a minnows much needed curation rewards but it also means that the content we deem to be of high quality, actually gets no love from our vote and can go unseen by the community. If you're going to support those you follow, make your vote worth something!

@satoshimoto gave me the rough guide of 11 likes per day. And even though I can't prove this I'm going to take it as gospel.

What are the golden rules of upvoting?

  1. Let your voting power fully recharge! - I'll have to wait about six days... But it'll be worth it.

  2. Maximum likes 11 per day! - This will ensure your voting power stays at 100%. You can go a little over this recommendation without too much backlash. Don't go upvote crazy.

  1. Share out your votes evenly! - You have a maximum of 11 votes per day. So make sure you allocate them correctly. I'd recommend 6 upvotes per day for those you're following and 5 upvotes a day for people outside your circle. This way you are giving love to your squad and still able to be on the lookout for up and coming users or the occasional whale.

In this video I further outline the importance of correct upvoting but I'm pretty sure I don't cover anything not in the article. For those short on time :)

Thanks for giving this a read/watch. I hope it helps out any minnows struggling to understand why upvote power is so important. There is no point in dishing out 100 upvotes that are worth essentially, nothing. Show support that has value, let that vote power grow!

I'm currently raising support on Steemit for a family who are coping with a terrible disease in the family. Let's show this family the power of a social media that's built on reciprocity and support! Read this article to learn more

I definitely made that mistake too!! I might as well have been Oprah, going crazy like "you get a vote, and you get a vote, the whole audience gets a vote!" Only instead of having billions of $$$ I was giving out fractions of a penny. So generous of me lol :)

It has to be the most common noob mistake I've seen so far on steemit. Hoping that new minnows learn quick.

Did you look like this :')

Haha yep just like that! 😂😂😂

Hahaha nice! I had a squizz (slang for look) at your profile. Followed for more embarrassing pictures of your cat :D

Lol thanks for that my friend. There's plenty more where that came from. If she doesn't kill me first. No regrets. Ps I'm now using squizz. What a great word!

Glad you're getting around! Don't know if you know about this already, but here's a site you may like: https://steemviz.com/pendingpayouts

Finally! I'm just glad I figured it out in my first week. And thanks for linking that site. Perfect for getting a rough idea of how much you can expect to make. Cheers.
