Mike Harrison - Fog of War [Original Track]
This is a beat I made recently - I envision it with more of a hiphop vocal over it. @beardedegghead actually is working on something for this as we speak!
Aside from more old school hiphop instrumentals, I've always liked this sort of ambient, chill take on hiphop. Not exactly sure what you would categorize this as honestly.
One of my favorite little production tricks is to actually throw a reverb before a compressor. You can hear this applied to the main sort of guitar-synth in this one. If tweaked appropriately, you can create this very persistent tail that takes the forefront of the track, creating a very ambient but at the same time in-your-face kind of atmosphere. You have to be a little careful doing so though, as it can get out of control pretty quickly. I have a few instrumentals where I've employed this method.
