Friday's Chicken Question
How often do you clean your coop?
Last week's question was, "Should hens be encouraged to lay eggs year round with additional light or other means or should they be allowed to rest during the winter months?" A few said that they use lights in their coop to encourage the hens to lay year round, but most said they preferred to let their hens follow their life cycle. Thanks for commenting.

Hahaha... I am actually a little embarrassed to answer this one.
I do not have a set schedule for cleaning them, and it probably does not get done as often as it should.
They free range, so they are only in there at night and to lay eggs, so they dont dirty it up much. Ill usually shovel out a few wheelbarrows of dirty bedding, and then, once every week or so, have a kid rake up a wheelbarrow of leaves to dump in there. I find raked up leaves to be wonderful bedding for them. Its dry, the droppings dont tend to cake up, and the smell stays down well. Once the leaves have been topped off several times, Ill go out and do it again. I dont think I have ever cleaned the whole thing out completely, I just do one area at a time, usually whatever's dirtiest.

In the winter, once, maybe twice, as I use the deep bedding method. From April to October, about once a month. I put down bedding once or twice, then clean it out and start again. Seldom or never smells of ammonia, even though 18 birds is far too many for a 70 sq. ft. coop.
I was right there too. I used the deep bedding method and cleaned out once a month. It made great compost!
