Why Weight?

in #blog8 years ago

So great to see you all on this blog today!

I feel the need to address something right away -something I feel is very important and will help all of us really turn the corner on this daily conversation in our lives about weight and body image.

I'd like for us to use this site as a way to explore the everyday issues, former expereinces, or deeper reasons that cause us to sabotage our health and well being and cause us at times to do a dangerous dance with food, weight, shame, blame, and so on.

I want to encourage us to speak on this blog beyond the weight, numbers, and food choices. I know there are other opportunities for you to discuss those topics on this site (and I encourage you to do so)

I know that it may seem like a numbers, sizes, food portions, etc. are important area to discuss BUT I want you to think about how easy it is for us as women to talk about how much we weigh - and WHY we weight that much - how much we want to lose - and WHY we can't. And in general, why is it so easy for us to qualify our worth as women by what we weigh?

  • Instead I'd like for us to keep in perspective what has lead you into this relationship with your body?
  • What triggers your self-sabotage?
  • What impacts your daily decisions around health?
  • What fears hold you back from truly loving you?
For chronic dieters (and I am one of them!) it is SO much easier to just discuss food choices and swap tips on how to eat less. But that isn't what the Weighting Game is all about. It's about how to enjoy your life MORE while changing your body to resemble a healthier you. It is about figuring out why you might be putting your life on hold - because you are constantly focusing on your body size. It is about discovering what holds us back, moves us forward, and frees us to be the strong mothers, sisters, lovers, and friends that we all are.

I know the details of losing weight are in the food choices.
But the details about raising your self-worth, breaking harmful patterns, and finally stopping the diet binge/restrict cycle is in the hard and concious work it will take to really be honest with yourself.

So as you journey into the challenge today and focus on what you are eating and how you are moving - I want you to use this site and this forum to discuss how you are FEELING. So many times we as women bypass our emotions and feelings and stuff them down with food. Not here. Not anymore.

Emotions are tricky because they are scary for some of us. Many of us were taught to not feel or that sharing your feelings was wrong. Not here. Not anymore.

Our weight issues aren't because of what we are eating. But what is eating us. Everyone on here has been on some 'diet' before and pledged away the pounds only to see them creep back in times ten. Not here. Not anymore.

We know better. Now let's feel better. If you are a compulsive overeater or a chronic dieter, there is an emotional reason for every morsel of food you place between your lips. Shaming ourselves into weigh ins or extreme diets don't work. What works is slowly untangling why when you set a goal you fail. Why when you set out to take time for yourself it is the first thing that you will relinquish when times get tough. Why we hide our bodies and our body fears from our partners and husbands. Or why our relationships aren't as loving or fulfilling as we want them to be.

Why we are overwhelmed with being a new mom. Or why we are scared at the thought that we won't ever get married.

These are things that have kept us trapped in the weighting game.
And these are things I want to encourage us to express on this site. With all the love and compassion in my heart, I ask you to think about this...
