Painting a comic - The techno-templar #23
A peek into the creation process of a fully watercolor, dystopian and gritty graphic novel.
Hi! Welcome back, here's the 23rd page of "Devlok, the Techno-Templar" , enjoy!
Now let's have a look at the process. For the book, I painted 54 pages like this (plus a few covers), they all size around 26x37cm (10,2x14,5 in). The paper is Arches 300g. It is tensed on a light wood board after having been watered and dryed.
First step, the pencil of course! If you wonder how I make a vanishing point far of the work board, I simply have a very long ruler.
Also I usually keep the pencil as simple as possible, to leave space for the further "deliriums".
And so when I make the ink, ...
... that's when I can really be free of my moves and do more details.
And same with the color. The only imposed thing is to follow the light.
(Now you can just go back to the top to look at the finished page again :D)

This keeps making me flash back to the Heavy Metal issues from my youth. I visited your website and saw that Mœbius was one of those who inspired you to get into art. It's definitely got that vibe to it.
Thank you for the nice comment @see.feel.write. I am glad to see connaisseurs ;)
This in freaking amazing - to say it politely. You draw all those pages by hand, take like 6months? The detail is really amazing the gritty style with the watercolor looks like fine art.
Thanks for commenting and appreciating the work @penderis! For the 54 pages it took around 10 months (without counting the writing of the story, the story board etc..). Altough it's very difficult to say as it's been done througout 2 years.
2 years.... That is dedication. Amazing work.
Learning about your little tips and tricks is awesome, like the far vanishing point with a long ruler. Thank you!
Glad if I can help! Yes a long ruler is practical but of course one must take some marks of the whole setting or it's lost when you move. You can also use a string nailed to the vanishing point. And when it's too far, well, you do it with the feeling :D
Love this, @haedre <3 Your pages are always so well detailed and well coloured <3 and the inking is so lovely, also <3 <3
