As far as job loss, would it be better to diversify your skills and talents rather than increase the same skills? For example, a truck driver (danger of loss due to self driving vehicles) learn construction skills. This would be the equivalent of not keeping all your eggs in one basket.

Regarding job loss: there are so many variables and unknowns. For example, driverless cars might very well cause massive job loss, but we don't know when. Personally, I think it's best to master a skill and then add on. Perhaps a small, part-time job or business venture is the way to go for some individuals. It all depends. What is certain is things change, so at the very least we should be mentally prepared to change careers at least once in our lifetime..
