Black Friday

in #photography9 years ago

OMG!!! I thought Black Friday was just passing by, but I just ordered a Mavic Pro as a new toy.
Don't have any experience, but just want to make those beautiful aerial shots I see everywhere, and lots of windsurfmovies and and and... I think I'm excited :P

Do you guys have any tips about flying with a drone, howto film with a drone etc? Need to prepare before it's being delivered. Any help I would appreciate.

Keep it in beginner mode for a while until you are used to it. Practice putting it into sport mode once you get better with it - i've had to use that to get a bit more power to get the drone back to me in high winds. Also test out the return to home feature a few times so you are confident with it. The mavic is great, but does have it's flaws and can scare you into thinking you have lost control of it sometimes :D

Great thanks for the tips! Lots of high winds here as well so better to practice at days without wind? What kind of flaws do you mean? IS it unexpected behavior from the Mavic you mean?

Definitely practice without too high wind. It can handle a lot but its better to learn without it.

The main flaws that i have seen are complaints with the sharpness of the images around the edges and problems with weird gimbal behaviour. In Nepal i was flying it and the gimbal started moving the camera all over the place. It looked like it was just falling out of the sky. Thankfully it wasnt, but i had to use return to home to get it back. I've also had issues with it drifting slightly left but calibration has sorted that. Theres various weird issues that people have on forums. A large percentage seem to be pilot error but there are defintitely some bugs in there!

hehe the Mavic is the perfect addon then for the days without wind and when I'm not on the water :D

Do you have an example of the sharpness complaints?

Scary story from your flight in Nepal. Does the return home function work without any flaws?

RTH works really well as long as you set the RTH height correctly. Be aware that this value tends to reset after firmware. If i recall, it defaults to 50m, i tend to set it higher just in case.

You should try it in high wind at some point. It's amazing how the footage looks.

I think i saw image quality issues on facebook pages but im afraid i cant find any right now

Oh, and another tip, for brighter days, get yourself a set of neutral density filters. That will cut down on the amount of light being exposed which helps cure a number of issues, the primary one being "rolling shutter effect"

Great tip about resetting that height. I assume when I receive the Mavic it doesn't have the latest firmware version?
But RTH and high wind is noted on my test list ;)

Do you have a tip for a specific set of filters?

And no, it probably wont have the latest firmware. Be patient with those updates, sometimes it looks like its doing nothing. Can take quite a long time to update.

That’s a sweet drone you’ve bought yourself! Hopefully you’ll be able to master it quick so you can post some photos and videos of your
