A Brief Cigar Review - Gispert RobustosteemCreated with Sketch.

in #cigars7 years ago (edited)

Handmade in Honduras, the Gispert is a cigar that I have not heard of until I was browsing online. Famous Smoke had an “under $50 box sale” going on at the time, and the Gispert, which comes in boxes of 15, was highly rated by customers. Many talked about it being a hidden gem. Tonight I shall find out!

The velvet-like Connecticut shade wrapper only shows minimal veins, the construction overall appears fantastic, like it is a cigar three times the price. Examining the Gispert with my hands, I don't notice any soft spots, it all seems uniform with tight seams. The aroma has notes of sweet hay and prune.

Flavor and smoke

As with many Connecticut wrapped cigars, The smoke is light and crisp. The sweet and light woodsy notes are pretty delightful. Normally I do not care for a heavy woodsy/cedar profile, but usually it's because the nuances are thick and heavy, but with the Gispert, it is quite light, so light it seems to want to transition into more of a graham cracker note. I also notice almond, a hint of chocolate, and a very mild spice.

Surprisingly for a mild cigar, the retro-hale isn’t very smooth. I am not sure why this is, it could be that the cedar flavors are on the finish compared to the usual forefront of each puff.

The Gispert seems to have a light pack, the smoke is somewhat airy, yet not too sparse. Each pull seems to bring in an equal amount of smoke and air. At the halfway point, the flavor notes have changed slightly, adding espresso to the otherwise light nuances.

Heading into the last third, the Gispert is becoming a tad boring. This tends to happen to my palette when I smoke a one dimensional cigar that is mild. I don’t mind the same flavor notes on a darker and more flavorful cigar, even when they do not change but remain one dimensional. There is something about an unchanging mild profile that fails to keep my attention. Having said that, there aren't any putrid flavors, and the Gispert is smoking just as fine as at the beginning.

Final Thoughts

The Gispert is a mild cigar full of light woodsy notes. It is a little interesting in the fact that it is a mild cigar, which normally means perfect for morning and mid-day, yet it would not pair well with coffee. I find my pairing of a gin and tonic complemented the Gispert nicely, a coffee with a cigar that has a mostly woodsy profile doesn’t sound appealing.

The Gispert’s construction was very good, and it is a lovely appearing cigar. My only complaint is the "airyness" of the smoke output, but the burn line was sharp, the ash strong enough, and it stayed lit.

If you are searching for a mild cigar with all of these qualities, you will not be disappointed, especially at this more than reasonable price. I am glad I bought a box, but I am sure they will last me a while, as I won’t be grabbing for them often, however, they definitely have their place.

My emoji rating for The Gispert Robusto: 😐/🙂

Hey @gregm! You have made it interesting and therefore good learning experience for me. Thank you!

Thanks @corvuscoraxx... cigars are beyond a hobby to me!

Good post, thank you!

Thanks! 😀

Hahaha... So nice to see some oldfashioned tobacco praise! I'm still vaping and your posts reminds me to mix up some cohiba. Frankly better than the real thing....

Love my cigars!
Cohiba vape? Probably much cheaper than the real thing too! 😆

Package just arrived. Thank you so much. I think I will try the Iron Horse first.

Awesome! I actually just had one 2 nights ago. Pretty decent

I'm half way through now. I'll have to make a post later about it an your giveaways / reviews.

Awesome, thanks! 😀

Ahhh good post.
I been going through review withdraw.
How do you think the gin effects the taste ??

Thank you sir! I haven't been smoking a lot of new cigars lately, time to get back to it!

I think the gin and ginger-ale paired well with the cedar notes, as it has it's own woodsy/earthy character, and it is light and crisp tasting like the Gispert.
I could imagine whiskey or rum doing well too, just something about having this cigar with coffee didn't sound good.
Cheers @Chromiumone 👍

Thx haven't been able to drink gin since I was about 18.....straight shot a bottle with a friend and was sick for 3 days. I did get to where I can smell it again without my stomach turning, took about 30 years to get there though lol

Ha wow! Yeah I could see that. Same happens to me when I smell Old English or that maddog 20/20. 🤢
