A Brief Cigar Review - Caldwell Savages
The Caldwell Cigar Brand is a boutique manufacturer who has recently built a solid following. I have found that most smokers either love or hate them, I relate more to the latter. Caldwell comes up with catchy names and creative packaging which I feel drives a great deal of the popularity. I just sat down in my smoking chair, I am ready to light up my first Caldwell Savages.
Prelight
Wrapper: Habano
Binder: n/a
Filler: n/a
Vitola: 6 x 46
Price: $11
The Savages is wrapped in a cammo-like tan and brown wrapper with visible veins, although the wrapper remains smooth.
Pre-light scents at the foot is heavy of pungent prune and a slight chocolate note, the wrapper itself wafts more of a barnyard aroma.
After clipping off only the pigtail, the cold draw is delightful, providing notes of cocoa, fruit, and a little pepper.
Flavor and Smoke
Shortly after lighting my Caldwell Savages, the flavor profile quickly makes itself known with strong pepper, and a very pronounced floral note. The retro-hale is an intense woodsy nuance with a smidgen of nuts.
What I find interesting is the pepper and nutty tones are reversed in the usual sequence to which they arrive in a cigar. You have the spice as a forefront note with each puff, then the nuts appear in the finish.
The floral nuance is robust to the point it is beginning to become more of a soapy taste, not quite the savage flavor profile I was expecting. This is what I have noticed about Caldwell tobacco, the intense and overbearing soap taste, at least I know the cigar is clean?
It looks like my beverage is in need of some regeneration, what pairs well with potpourri? 😅 but seriously, apple cider comes to mind.
At the halfway point, all the Savage is giving me now is soapy cedar that is drying out my mouth. I am trying hard to enjoy it while looking for other flavor qualities, but I'm really not digging the profile.
On the positive side, the smoke output is pretty good, the burn-line has been fine, and my glass is full again.
I admit I have not been impressed with the majority of Caldwell Cigars, at least in the flavor department, I tend to find this soap taste in the majority of their cigars, however I have had a couple decent ones in the past.
Quoting from a sales website: Caldwell Savages, a premium handmade cigar that is so rich and complex, they are keeping the entire blend a household secret! We really don’t know what’s inside these mystery sticks,
however, we can tell you, that in true Caldwell fashion, they are super-rich, highly complex, and delicious!
🤥
This full flavored, medium body cigar delivers a fragrant ensemble of nut, spice, leather, and coffee flavors that build with intensity and remain consistent
I’ll give them the fragrant part
Ok, I get some nut and spice as well.., maybe leather has a soapy taste?
I’ve smoked farther than I cared too, if it wasn’t for this review, I would have ditched it 30 minutes ago. While it’s not outright nasty, I find the main flavor, which of course I describe as soap, to be incompatible with my particular palate. Maybe you will find it pleasant, I know many who do, we all have different palates.
Final Thoughts
Well, the pre-light draw and aroma was very pleasant, after lighting the cigar, it took a turn for the worse. I can only recommend the Caldwell Savages if you don’t mind “smoking” an unlit cigar.
For you normal cigar smokers, if you find yourself swearing more than normal on any given day, no need to wash your mouth out with soap, instead grab a Caldwell Savages.

Thanks for the review. You're a real trooper.
Yeah for the most part I've stopped smoking cigars I don't like. If I can't get into it - I just dump it and get another one.
I agree, life is too short to smoke crap ! 😁
Cool band but that's about all the good I can say about them.
Haven't smoked a good one yet :(
Was looking for a word to describe the funky taste.....soapy works, possibly combined with some animal's posterior.
Exactly, Caldwell does an awesome job at marketing and packaging.
But yeah, soapy butt? LOL
This may sound unknowledgeable but I always love how you set up your pictures. For some reason I dig the matches lol.
Thanks.., in my early ones it was just the cigar, seemed plain. You always want the focus on the main subject, without too much busy pattern and such, but it helps to have an accomplice in the photo.
I agree, and very nice sir!
Good review, and I am grateful for the heads up. I won't waste my budget on crap.
Thanks!
No problem, thanks for the comment!
Not enough booze lol no grilled chicken either, will be sure not to import one of these though cheers.

😄 , Yeah your money is better spent on others.
Cheers! 👍😤
