Even the walls speak
"History develops ,art stand still "E. M Forster
Every Wednesday I go to Santo Nino church to have a communion with my God and to do my self reflection .Others say I am religious but to me I'm just another sinner trying to find the right path.
If you care to notice, you will learn much about the paintings that hang on the wall. One, I learned that Spaniards arrive in Philippines in 1521 and we're driven off by Lapu Lapu a local chieftain only to return and colonize it for a total of 333 years.
The first Christian wedding was celebrated between a Spanish soldier and a niece of local chieftain. Seeing that, interracial marriages aren't as new as we thought they were. I can't help wonder was it out of love or an act of strengthening warring parties? I wonder had her struggles been similar to the real life Pocahontas?
Cebu's Sinulog dates back several centuries ago .Generations after generation had passed on their spiritual belief as well as cultural practices such as dance, music, fashion through this festive event.
Talking of belief in its walls also are accounts of
miraculous apparitions of the child Jesus in our daily lives. No wonder devotees just kept on growing. And this is good especially that the church needs restoration work having been damaged by a strong typhoon many years back. Also, it being under the national historical institute protection we can be assured that it won't fall into decay as most landmarks.
From these painting you'll know we had been into wars before we were declared a independent nation. Also, on close perusal you'd know Filipinos drink "tuba " a fermented wine from coconut.
So next time you come and visit this church to examine it's walls and you'd be surprised that these walls resonates all the historical facts you've read about in school. Here are few more wall sculpture that I find interesting below.
You can see the voyage the Spaniard made to spread Christianity and to colonize us,the Augustinian order who runs the church and the loyal parishioners and the candle sellers that are pretty much an iconic image of the place till now.
The artisan are long gone and we had turned the pages of time ,the place may look different then than now yet these art remains for us and the generations after a reminder of our unique history as nation and the lessons that it carries with as well as our wishes to the Supreme
