Grapthar's Song of the Day: Son of Sam 'Michael'

Son of Sam - Michael
Son of Sam was a horror-punk/deathrock
band, formed as a side project for Todd Youth, guitarist of Danzig. The band also consisted of Danzig and Samhain members London May (drums) and Steve Zing (bass), and they enlisted Davey Havok from AFI for vocals. The band was sort of a modern tribute to Samhain (hence the name Son of Sam), writing their own original music in the same sort of vein. They released one album with this lineup, which is one of my favorite records ever, and apparently have released a second album with a different vocalist and drummer, although I've never actually heard that one myself.

The album Songs from the Earth
was released in 2001, and is everything I would want from a band emulating Samhain. It's heavy, and super dark, incorporating ideas and styles from metal, punk, and rock. Havok's vocal style at this time was super raw, and fits perfectly with the music. This is probably the "lightest" song on the album, beginning with a great bass riff, and some awesome sus-sy guitar chords that really bring out the mysterious/unknown sort of feeling. The chorus is catchy, without feeling cheesy, and the lyrics weave a tale of what I believe is a fallen angel discussing the day he finally gets revenge for his punishment.
I always enjoy these songs it gives me something new and fun to listen to while I take the subway.
This is a very cool song! Just got some @actifit points for jumping around to it. :)
I like Misfits and Danzig, and this kind of fits in with that. Glad to have found this band; thanks!
Yeah! These guys are awesome, glad you dig them! Definitely check out the album Songs from the Earth, it's well worth it.
