Avishai Cohen Trio - The Ever Evolving Etude (Live)

I realized as I was

typing this post that, much like The Beatles, Avishai Cohen is an artist that I feel like I have to share at least a few times a month. Avishai Cohen is an Israeli jazz bassist/composer, who began playing electric bass at age 14. He performed in a group during his time in the Israeli Army, and afterwards began studying upright bass (which would come to be part of his signature style). He eventually moved to New York City and studied at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and then was signed to record deal by the legendary Chick Corea. He has since performed and recorded as a solo act, and with his trio, creating a unique sound that combines Latin and Middle Eastern ideas.

Listen to The Ever Evolving Etude (Live) by Avishai Cohen Trio here.

This is a live version

of a tune that appeared on the trio's 2008 album, Gently Disturbed. This album was actually one of the few that first got me interested in modern jazz; though it uses some wild metric and harmonic ideas, it's a bit more accessible than some
other contemporary stuff. I was very interested in prog. and math-rock at the time, so this was a very natural bridge between that world and jazz, particularly as I became more interested in hearing and practicing odd-meters. The trio are absolutely incredible on the album and in this performance; the line-up at this concert consisted of Azerbaijani pianist Elchin Shirinov and legendary American drummer Mark Giuliana.
