Matthew 5:25
"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court.
Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge,
and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison."

In my country, many innocent persons have been thrown into prison custody even though they are yet to be pronounced guilty by a Judge, they call them awaiting trial inmates.
Jesus advice to his disciples takes on greater meaning because he was aware of the inefficient and corrupt judicial system of the nations where the innocent could suddenly become guilty. The way out was to make peace Wit the law officer on the way. This can not be seen as an act of cowardice but that of reasonableness.
