Sweet Girl (film) : Initially it seemed like typical Hollywood but watch it to the end

If you know, you know. If you've seen it you know what I am talking about and I am not going to spoil it in this write up about the latest Netflix release Sweet Girl starring Jason Momoa.

The film begins with a family in a very unfortunate situation where mom is dying of cancer. At the seeming end of all available options, and enthusiastic doctor informs them that a generic drug has been made available that is affordable and a potential cure to whatever kind of cancer it is that is afflicting her and briefly the family is thrilled only to have the chance of this drug being made available taken away by the pharmaceutical group pulling the product at the last minute.

When the media gets involved about this drug company pulling the affordable version of the drug off the market, Ray Cooper (Momoa) phones in to tell the CEO of the company that if his wife dies, that it is going to be the CEO's death sentence as well.

Thus begins our tale of revenge that takes us all over the place and the battles include his daughter Rachael (played by Isabela Merced), who he has been training in a wide variety of martial arts since she was a little kid.

Rachael is a bad ass in her own right but her only limitation is her size, because she is quite petit. Her and her father make a good combo though and the fight sequences are very nicely done in a quite typical Hollywood fashion.

Fun fact about anyone who thinks that "Rachael" looks familiar but they can't quite place how that is. It is because she as Dora from Dora the Explorer movies. I did not watch these films because I'm not a toddler, but my friends who have kids had it on sometimes to keep their kids quiet while daddy and their "uncle" (me) have some beers.

Maybe she was getting a bit too "top heavy" to continue doing this role

Anyway, I was having a discussion with a friend about Sweet Girl and asked him if he saw it and the conversation went like this

ME: Have you seen that new Momoa film called Sweet Girl on Netflix?
Friend: Yeah, it sucked
Me: Did you watch it all the way to the end?
Friend: No, turned it off about an hour in

Do not do what this guy did. I will admit that I finished the film in multiple sittings because of the fact that yes, it does appear to by a typical Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Liam Neeson, The Rock type film but if you don't watch it to the end, you will miss the brilliance of it.

I haven't been reviewing films much recently but as you might be able to tell from my accidental last post that i put in this section while working on this draft, I have been under house arrest for a while now. Movies are all I really have at the moment.

My overall rating

I think this is one of the better action films that I have seen in the past year but this is only because of the overall story that you have to watch all of in order to get. This is what MAKES the film. If you do like my friend did and turn it off halfway through I would agree with him - yeah, this film is nothing special and actually seems to be a cliché of dozens if not hundreds of other films out there. It has a lot of impractical moments that exist in all action films but at the end of it all, I really liked it and think that others will as well.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers Trousers!" i give this film the rating of

of if you absolutely insist on having numbers I give it a 7.5 / 10
