Liar Liar (film): decent comedy from the 90's

Back before Jim Carrey went bat$*t crazy and became a painter, he would release blockbuster movies filled with laughs. This one from 1997 was one of them.

The premise behind this movie is something that any of us that have ever had to deal with lawyers can relate to. That is, lawyers are completely full of s**t. They make a living by stretching the truth and excelling at convoluting a situation to the point where justice becomes injustice.

This is Jim's character in "Liar Liar." He plays Fletcher Reede, a successful attorney whose primary focus in life is the advancement of his career at all costs. He spends every day of his life telling half-truths to people, even the people he cares about. He adores his son Max but one day skips his son's birthday party in order to attempt to advance his career. He lies on the phone about why he can't be there and his son of course is very unhappy about this. Max uses his birthday wish while blowing out the candles to "wish that his father couldn't lie for just one day."

The wish immediately comes true and Fletcher finds that it is impossible for him to tell a lie or even a half truth. He also can't ask question that he already knows the answer to and also can not opt to say nothing when he knows the truth or has an honest opinion. This causes a lot of problems when he enters his office as he proceeds to tell everyone what he really thinks of them. In a particularly funny scene he is attempting to write lies, only to discover that he is incapable of this as well. He can't even claim that a pen is a different color than it is.

the pen is BLUE

The biggest problem is that he has a very important court case on this "day of no lies" and he is very aware of the fact that their entire case is built on lies. He tries everything he can to postpone the case but all of his attempts fail even when he goes to the bathroom and beats himself up.

Upon returning to the courtroom the judge simply asks him "are you able to continue?" Seeing as how he is incapable of lying he reluctantly responds "yeeeeeesssss."

That trailer is really low resolution but i think it kind of adds to the ambiance of this film being more than 20 years old.

Overall, this is a feel-good comedy that kind of says a lot about all of us in the end, not just lawyers. How often do we pretend to like people that you don't, give compliments to people that don't deserve them, or simply embellish stories that we tell to others?

This comedy comes highly recommended by me.

Great And Very Informative Post for Those who addicted to watch comedy movie.
I not watch this movie, but if i get time, i try to watch this movie.

Yes, Liar Liar is great movie of all Time and so is Jim Carrey

Today I was watching Dumb and Dumber to

It's also fun movie, hope you also make article on it

True the plot is a little corny, my only criticism of the movie, but Jim Carrey's wonderfully energetic and most of the time hilarious performance more than compensates. Liar Liar is easily one of Carrey's better films, I do confess I will need to see a few more of his movies before concluding which one's his best to save bias. What Liar Liar manages to do is have a slightly corny though very interesting idea, and make into a good spirited and absolutely hilarious film. The script almost the whole time verged on hysterically funny, and there are many priceless scenes, especially the courtroom scene- I needed to go to the bathroom to check I hadn't wet myself from laughing so much. The other performances were great, Cary Elwes was excellent, and the boy was very sweet and charming. Overall, a hilarious movie, that does cheer you up considerably after a hard day, I still chuckle even thinking of it. There is so much to recommend this, but at the end of the day, it is Carrey's picture.

Jim Carrey became a painter? Wow, guess that's y i havnt been seeing more of his movies lately, this movies is just fantastic, it reminds me so much of Thousand Words by Eddie Murphy

This movie reminds me when I went to the cinema for the first time with my wife. I remember those! Jimmy carrey at that time was my favorite actor because he made me laugh with all his movies and a lying liar was one of them.

My favorite scene is when he is in court and tries to lie and can not lol ... it must be frustrating not to be able to tell a lie when the occasion deserves it

One of Jim Carrey's best movies, in that it found a natural storyline for him to do his physical comedy shtick, whereby he got to do his astonishingly versatile facial comedy mugging within the context of a dramatic story that we actually cared about.

Up until this point, Carrey made no pretense at acting, and was all about the comedy, and in Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber (my personal favorite, since the sheer silliness and laughs-per-minute have never been matched), he gave some of the funniest performances ever put on film. But you never believed him in any of them.

Then came this movie, in which he still got to rubber up his face for some of the most high octane mugging he ever did: the scene where he kicks his own ass is a virtuoso demonstration of unrestrained wackiness, and the Law-firm Board meeting where he roasts the partners is one of the greatest comedy set-pieces of Carrey's entire career!

And yet, this comedy also had a dramatic frame, where you actually cared about his parental relationship with his son. It's a wonderful blend of comedy and drama.

The problem was the Carrey got a Golden Globe for it, and went off chasing Oscars (which he never got, by the way), and his movies became increasingly ambitious dramatically, and he rarely got an opportunity to indulge in full bore comedy craziness from that moment on.

It's a shame, because Carey will never be as good as Robert De Niro or Benedict Cumberbatch at acting, but at comedy he's one of the all time greats, the absolute best at what he did. It's like if Usain Bolt gave up running in the middle of the Olympics to be a lawyer: you're like, look Usain, you're the lightning bolt, go make storms, we'll hire Johnny Cochran if we need a lawyer lol.

Anyway, this movie is one of Carrey's best, with a few scenes that are easily as funny as his earlier purely physical comedies. :)
