Hash House Harriers - week 21
This Thursday's Hash was a special one as it was the final time that long-standing members of the local chapter will be the Hare's with their mother hash.... Let me translate that: Some people that have been with us for a long time (far longer than I have been around) are moving to the U.K. and they laid their final trail with us this week.
Our journey began this week on the grounds of a temple in a covered event shelter that they have there and it is a good thing too because it was raining pretty hard at the start of the run.
I had never done one of these in the rain and there are obvious benefit and pitfalls. The benefit is that it is significantly cooler when it is raining on you and the downside is that you are wet and there is a lot of potential to end up with "sloppy socks" which is never a good thing when you are exercising.
This trail had plenty of big hills, which kill me and for some reason it particularly hurts my back... I think this has something to do with the fact that I have bad posture when running (and sitting at home... pretty much all aspects of my life.) However, "Mr Poo and Knockout" (the couple who are moving away,) installed a beer stop about 3km in on the run.
Although this doesn't sound very fitness-ey, a beer stop is exactly what it sounds like. There is a checkpoint where you stop and have a beer before carrying on for the rest of the run.
In the end it was a short run and quite a scenic one as well. At one point we were crossing rivers on tiny bamboo bridges so there was also an aspect of slight danger... which is always fun for me.
Back at camp we got down to the usual shenanigans of acting silly and drinking a bunch of beer...
Distance ran: 6.3 km
terrain: hilly and wet jungle
average time by entire group: 1 hour 16 minutes
As usual I strongly encourage you to seek out your local Hash House Harriers as it is a global organization of people who are a lot of fun and get some exercise (which is likely negated by the beers afterwards.) It is a wonderful way to meet interesting people and just generally have a good time. They are a global organization and you don't have to drink to get involved.
Reading this post made me smile. It reminded me of the beginning when I started to do running. I was a beginner, learning to do things right in order to avoid injuries and illnesses. One day it was raining when I supposed to have my training. I remember I wrote to our Facebook group asking what to do. Lucky me, a personal trainer replied to me telling me that running is not an indoor sport 😁
So I went out in pouring rain and had the best run of my life and I'm glad I did because the next race was in pouring rain as well but I was already used to it.
The beer stop is funny as well, you don't see that very often 😁
Congratulations, you did well!
It would have been cool to see a picture of one of the bamboo bridges. Have the people that are leaving already scoped out the HHH chapters near where they are moving to? I feel like I would be slipping and sliding all over in the mud if the raid was that bad!
