Grand Canyon - Chiang Mai : A wonderful day out for 3 bucks

in #tourism5 years ago

I randomly encountered this place while doing a Hash House Harriers run, we were doing a trek right beside it and as we peered over the fence I was like "holy crap! What is that?"

This man-made hole in the ground (I don't know how or why) is filled with spring-fed clean water and is surrounded by a bunch of extreme-sport activities such as ziplines and my personal favorite - simply jumping off the side.

They have loads of food and drinks and if you want to get wasted, nobody is gonna stop you. However, I would be a little bit careful because obviously this place introduces a lot of opportunities to injure yourself or die. You have to sign a waiver upon entering the park that releases the owners from any sort of liability if you hurt yourself. Don't let that scare you though, because all the designated "drop zones" have been properly tested and yes... the water is as deep as it needs to be. It is actually so deep that without dive gear, you are not going to find the bottom.

In recent years they installed a giant inflatable section to the park as well and when I was there at least, there was a ton of lifeguards and wearing a life vest is mandatory for anyone under a certain age. There is also an area for the really young kids where the water is only about a foot deep that I suppose had to be constructed out of something that floats since this "lake" is hundreds of feet deep.

I can't remember the last time I had this much fun. It really brought me back to my youth and I got to run around with my friends in their 30s 40's and 50's and all of us got to be young again. At the steep cost of 100 Baht a person (around $3) there really isn't much reason to not go here.

TL;DR

This might be one of the coolest things to do while visiting Chiang Mai - I mean, who doesn't love a water park? The activities that they have cater to a wide range of kids and adults and despite the fact that they really could "Disneyworld" you on the food and drink prices - they don't do that. The price for everything is extremely low. I would consider this to be a "must do" while visiting Chiang Mai and at $3 a person, there isn't much reason not to.

This is right up my street and something I wouldn't hesitate in going to on a regular basis. I am sure you could injure yourself if you mix fun and alcohol it normally happens lol. $3 is a bargain and if I make it out that side I will remember this post and visit.

i'm surprised it isn't more well-known. I have lived in this country for over a decade and have never even heard it mentioned by anyone.

Oh! Me encanta este post! Quiero ir a ese lugar. Necesito algo así en mi vida URGENTE!

Oh! I love this post! I want to go to that place. I need something like that in my life URGENT!

I love this kind of places because although is manmade in a way, it is still natural. Aquaparks are fun but indoor is not always what people are looking for.

About the safety, they usually respect standards because even with you signing the paper to take full responsibility, if lots of accidents happen, that's not a good publicity for them. Nowadays you can write on various social media sites, people can do a search and your business is ruined in two minutes.

I've been talking to a guy from an underground amusement park situated in an old salt mine, who told me if there's a sign saying max 120 kg, that means it resist to 150kg or so because you have to be sure.

The other good thing is that they are not greedy. Some business owners in the tourist industry tend to opt for ripping off tourist and don't care about what happens after. A better strategy is to show them they are welcomed back because it's safe and affordable.

That's definitely a place to visit if you're in the area. Thank you for your review, it's helpful as I haven't seen many similar places.

I apperantly have to travel to Chiang Main at least one more time. I did not even know this thing was there...

I am such a bad tourist

nah. they don't really advertise at all. I didn't know it was there either until encountering it by accident.

That is pretty cool. It looks like it used to be an old rock/mineral quarry or something like that. If that is the case I imagine it is very deep. I went fishing in an abandon quarry like that in Oklahoma once. The water was so clear you could see the small fish before they even grabbed your hook.

you are likely correct about the origin. I wonder how it is so watertight though. Because nearby there are some rather disgusting and exceptionally polluted water features that I certainly hope do not connect to this place. Perhaps when they were digging they unearthed a spring by accident and that is why the quarry is no longer used.

That sounds like a really good explanation. Depending on what they were mining the surrounding rock may not be porous enough t let the water in or out.

Wow I ama amaze at the natural beauty of this place and also with the level of fun and playing time someone would have there , the price is also very reasonable and cheap . The place really looks interesting to visit

Ah man this looks way better than the one I went to on Koh Phangan!

Really a very pleasant place to enjoy leisure time with family but we have to be careful when carrying children. Maybe the cheap price and good service are the attractions of this place.
