Final Fantasy 15: Roughly halfway point

in #games7 years ago

This was always going to be a multi-part series because these games are massive and a title that many people look forward to for long periods of time. It was the "straw that broke the camel's back" for me as I don't normally spend this much money on things but FF15 was the "box that needed to be ticked" in order to "push me over the edge" and insure that I would, in fact, purchase a PS4.

Now that I am done with the cliches (expect more later) let's move on the game and sadly, most of what I have to say isn't positive.

As I have mentioned before, this game is beautiful, and as time goes on I can say that it might be a little bit too beautiful because in big battles, there are constant frame rate drops that are occurring. Perhaps most people wouldn't notice this but I did in certain large battles involving multiple enemies. I guess we should be happy it doesn't happen more often because there is a LOT going on in these battle sequences.

i would argue that many battles have a bit too much going on

This brings me to my next point. The battles that you have with massive opponents like Leviathan take place in such a massive arena that it is extremely difficult to figure out what the actual hell is going on. The camera constantly flips around and then you warp to a particular vantage point only to spend the first moments that you are there trying to figure out what is up and where you should be facing.... normally at this point your advantage has been removed and when you finally find your enemy, it is about to strike you.

I appreciate what they are attempting to do here, but while visually appealing it is just a clusterF**K for the most part.

The story is entertaining enough but it is also going in so many directions that I can't really say what the hell is going on. Maybe I am not a big enough nerd for this (I'm a pretty big nerd) but when my party starts talking about something that was likely mentioned before, I have no idea what they are talking about and thank god the map system is helpful or I would likely never arrive at the destination that we are meant to be heading towards.

There are 4 main characters in your group and I have already discussed how I wish there was a "mute" button for your pal Prompto, who probably deserves a Razzie nomination right alongside "Navi" from Ocarina of Time (HEY! LISTEN!) for an award for most hated sidekick in a video-game.

However, now that he is out of the group for a while (he disappears after a battle) it seems as though the people in charge of the script were like "this isn't near annoying enough" and decided to make Noctis (the character that is "YOU" in the story) become a whiny bitch-boy all of a sudden. Nearly everything he says get an eye-rolling response from me and at least one of the members of the group is getting fed up with his shit also - I can applaud that. Overall, I would say the English voice acting in this title is extremely bad for at least half of the characters.

Now, onto my biggest gripe. The friggin cutscenes man!

source

Before i bought this game i read an article whose title was along the lines of "Final Fantasy 15 to feature less cutscenes and more interactive content" and to this I say "how many friggin cutscenes were in it before they made this change? All of it was a cutscene?

There are waaaaaaaaaay too many cutscenes in this game and this adds to massive load times. It seems like every time i go though a single short battle I have to watch a 10 minute short film and it has gotten to the point where I clean my living room rather than watch them at this point. The scenes themselves are lovely, but then we run into the problem of the bad English script and quite poor voice acting (to the point that many forums suggest that you change the spoken language to Japanese and just read the subtitles - something I believe i will do today.)

Despite the fact that I am bashing the crap out of this game, for some reason I can't stop playing or you know, playing for 15 minutes and then watching 45 minutes of cutscenes.

Prompto (featured in the foreground taking a selfie) might be the worst character in Final Fantasy history as well as a Logan Paul lookalike

That is too bad that it isn't living up to the hype. At least not on all of the levels you had hoped. I know how problematic bad camera angles can be when you are trying to maneuver your character around. It sucks that they don't give you a fixed camera option or something like that. It certainly doesn't sound like they have the same quality standards they once did...

on the contrary i think the quality standards were immensely high, the problem is that random encounters can be in the middle of the wood or something, so your camera angle might be fixed behind a tree so you con't even know what is near you in many instances, for the most part this is irrelevant because you can quite easily win all of these battles but I like to finish my enemies with finesse.

There is an option for the camera to be set to "FAR" in the menu but this simply makes you even MORE susceptible to trees and other environmental factors getting the way. I don't know what they could have done to prevent this.... it is frustrating as hell though.

However, I still can't stop playing! :)

I can't remember the last one I played. I know I finished X. I might have played the one that came after that a little bit. It was about that time I got busy with other stuff and I eventually ended up selling my PS2. I'd love to have a newer console, but I don't think I would be able to manage my time wisely if I owned one.

Yeah, too much cutscenes could be boring if not used correctly. I like cutscenes in my metal gear solid games but not so much in other franchises

it's getting worse as the game goes on. I ran into a character that you had 4 choices of the conversation, all of which led to a cutscene and of course a massive load time. urgh!
