Dogs (Netflix series): Suprisingly boring

in #tv7 years ago

The trailer for this series has you believing that it is going to be a bunch of stories that are tragic or heart-warming stories about dogs making a difference in people's lives. That is what I was hoping anyway. Unfortunately, while it does focus on those sorts of stories it is also quite dull in its presentation.

I am the kind of guy that if I see you walking with a doggo and it is friendly, I promise you that i will probably be more interested in knowing the fur-friend than I am in meeting you. There are a lot of people like this and I am one of them. So you could say that I like dogs and am far more willing to give a show featuring dogs a chance and with this show I did give it a chance...2 chances actually.

I watched 2 episodes: One was about a girl who is going to get a much needed service dog to help manage her seizures and the other is a story about a man how risks great personal harm to smuggle his dog out of war-torn Syria. Both of these sound pretty interesting, right?

Well, they're not.

I think that Netflix (or whoever made this and then sold it to Netflix) is falling in line with everyone else when they stick to the formula of episodes needing to be 1 hour long, even if there isn't enough material to make it an hour and this is what ruins "Dogs." Sometimes I think producers just need to admit that there "isn't enough material for an hour" and cut it short. I am sure they have their reasons for making EVERYTHING an hour long but in many cases this actually ruins shows for me.

I almost feel like I am betraying my pet by saying that this series is not good but that is really how I feel. I think that if each of these stories had been as long as they needed to be.... instead of an hour long... that they could have been much better. I understand why in the past when commercial networks restricted run-times why this would be necessary but if the show is designed exclusively for use on Netflix I don't understand why so many series stick to this format and in the process ruin the show's watch-ability.

Sorry Dogs, but i don't like you.

I have seen the effect of having to extend episodes to a certain amount of time, when they do not need to. I like the 20 minute episodes that are full of substance

YES! Exactly. I wish netflix had a search option for this. There are no commercials so I really don't understand why EVERY damn series is an hour per episode. I would understand if it was on regular TV at first and then later ported to Netflix, but most of the serial-offenders are Netflix originals.

I agree. If the running time of the short video is forcibly extended, the quality of the content is reduced. No wonders in a way. Thank you for the good review! You’ve just got a full upvote from us :D
