Detroit: Become Human (PS4): My early thoughts

This game came bundled with my PS4 and I have had it on the shelf for 3 months. I recently finished Horizon Zero Dawn and figured i would give it a go. I have played about 2 hours of the game and so far my impressions are a little less than awesome.

The game starts out interesting enough, and the graphics are absolutely stellar to say the least. It almost seems like you are watching actual live action during the initial "quest" of recovering a hostage from a rooftop.

You are an android during this sequence and you have the ability to look at evidence around you and recreate a crime-scene using i guess very fast math and power of deduction. This part of it is quite cool at first but actually becomes a bit annoying pretty quickly.

The information that you find in the crime scene gradually increases your probability of being able to talk the other android out of what he is doing. Eventually you get close enough to 100% to go ahead and initiate the negotiation with him.

This is all fine and dandy, and I will admit is a kind of cool game design but here in the underlying problem: You don't really feel a part of the game. It is like a choose your own adventure book where you are only periodically given even the opportunity to do anything. It is a modern-day Dragon's Lair. Most of what is going on is completely independent of where you happen to be.

I suppose this might appeal to some people but there is also that irritating aspect of walking around and doing next to nothing... a lot. This happens in the very next scene where your objective is to go and pick up some paint for your owner... wooo hooo!

The camera is also a bit clunky when you are walking around and it can, at times, prove to be a bit frustrating because you can't look where you want for whatever reason. Mostly, I don't really feel as though I am playing this game, but that I am watching that recent Black Mirror episode where you occasionally make a choice that dictates the direction of the show. The game looks great and the scenes are beautiful as is the music. However, for me anyway, I am experiencing difficulty in staying interested because I don't feel as though I am really a part of what is going on. If i want to watch a movie I will watch a movie. So far, Detroit: Become Human feels exactly like that.

I won't give up, but I don't see myself really getting involved in this game a great deal.
