Bar Nah Baan - suprer friendly and cheap, but not worth driving to

in #getyerlearnon5 years ago (edited)

So I relocated out of the city center today to a suburb that is around 10km or so from downtown. This is a very manageable distance on a scooter or in my case a 24 speed hybrid mountain bike. I decided to wander and have a look at my suburban neighborhood and stumbled upon an odd, but very friendly bar in my vicinity.

It is called "Naa Baan Bar" or "Bar Naa Baan" which literally means "a bar in front of the house" and that is exactly what it is. I was there early so I didn't really expect any company and was the only customer and was welcomed by some very friendly people who were actually the only staff in the joint.

I had an ice cold beer in my hand just a few moments after sitting down and was later presented with a hand-written menu for snack items they have. I got some roasted pork and it was ok but nothing particularly special. They turned on the TV to feature one of my least favorite sports in the world and I didn't even watch it.

there she is, trying to turn on the projector for me

They talked a lot to me because I broke my rule of not revealing that I can speak Thai and well, the conversation started to come fast and furious and I didn't really want to speak Thai anymore so i was kind of happy they went back to their phones :)

Overall, this place is actually extremely common (although normally not literally in the yard of the family home) there was nothing particularly special about the spot, but the prices were about 20% less than I have gotten accustomed to paying in the downtown area.

I can't really imagine why anyone who doesn't live here would ever end up in this part of town but if by some strange chance that person ends up being you than this is a great place to go pay $2 for a huge bottle of beer (about 3-4 glasses) and have some very friendly people serve you.

A real "hidden" secret right in front of their house

Seems like a very enterprising group, making do with what is available to them. Interestingly enough, several years ago I found that some of the best restaurants in Santa Barbara California USA, were located on two streets and in small and very old residences. Now, I'm not sure if they are still there, but it was definitely in vogue for quite a while. Thank you for your post @gooddream.

Wow, that is pretty impressive for a bottle of beer! Too bad the food wasn't a little better. I think we all need that one "go-to" spot where the food and drinks are always consistent and it isn't too hard on the pocket book. I have a place down the road from me that almost meets those criteria though it is a bit more expensive than I would like. I don't usually mind paying because the food is consistently good. Have you found any places yet that you keep going back to time and time again?

Nice find!

An ice cold beer in Thailand right about now sounds really good to me. The hoops someone would have to jump through to have a bar at their suburban residence here would be unbelievable.

You have probably found one of the places only locals would go and will be a celebrity!
