Axe Throwing Bar - Awesome

in #travel4 years ago

I don't really spend a lot of time in Bangkok, but I am very aware of the fact that if something becomes popular really anywhere in the world, Bangkok will make one as well.

I have heard of these axe-throwing bars in other countries and my friend was adamant we go to one he knew about in Bangkok and I was actually reluctant to go.

It was really great fun.

If there is one thing I am 100% certain of it is this: Booze and sharp weapons, especially if the idea is to throw them as hard as you can, go very well together.

The place is called Golden Axe, which also happens to be one of my favorite games from the early 90's (or was it late 80's.)

It wasn't super-cheap, but it wasn't terribly expensive either. During happy hour, which is just a sales tactic because it is always happy hour, you get 2 people for the price of one. We were the only people there because I prefer to day drink and the staff was extremely helpful and enthusiastic.

She gave us a quick tutorial and of course she was amazing at it. Then she let us have a few practice throws for free and of course we both sucked. There is a trick to it though, and she corrected our methods which were completely wrong.

It seems obvious once it is pointed out, but if you are not a certain distance from your target, the blade doesn't have much chance of being in the correct position (relative to its rotation) to even have a chance of sticking into the wood.

Once this is pointed out to you (and it is marked on the ground,) it is actually quite simple and both me and my pal soon found ourselves feeling like experts as we frequently hit the bull's eye for 5 points.

Our trainer kept score and probably faked her enthusiasm, but I didn't really care if she meant it or not. It was fun and she was a great guide. I really enjoyed this trip and I don't think there is any easier way to have that much fun for $5.

If you find yourself in Bangkok, this place is in the back of a rather popular "market" of sorts that there is a good chance you would be in the area of anyway, since most tourists end up on Sukhumvit Road between the Asok and Nana stations at some point in their time here anyway.

Highly recommended!

Have you ever done this? I would love to hear about your experience if you have!

My wife has been wanting to go to one of these, but I am not sure where the closest one is. I agree with you about sharp objects and alcohol not going together but then I think about darts and how you don't really hear of anyone putting someones eye out :) Plus I used to clay pigeon shoot while drinking, so that seems even more of a bad idea! This looks like a really cool place and that is awesome that you were able to get private tutorials! Maybe you can find a good one in Vietnam to visit!

looks like good fun. Better than darts as this is physical whereas darts isn't really going to break any sweat. I was tempted to buy some throwing knives years ago.
You voted on 3 posts that are 23 and 24 days old this morning. I am grateful, but doesn't benefit us lol.

Oh man, it's so funny that you posted this. I live in Scotland and an axe throwing bar had literally just opened around the corner from my work! I had no idea it was a thing. I am definitely going to try it.

oh you really should. It was a lot of fun. It was over pretty quickly but i think it was worth the $5 :)

Greetings, @gooddream. That's a very particular kind of entertainment and in my opinion a bit risky. I wouldn't dare hahaha A hug for you.

OMG that must have been loads of fun! Do they ACTUALLY serve alcohol there?!?! lol Drunk axe throwers.... hmmmm I am not convinced lol!

She gave us a quick tutorial and of course she was amazing at it.

Yeah her boyfriend better mind his P's and Q's haha!

I have been seeing axe throwing show up a lot recently. I may have to join the cool kids and try it out.

I think @derangedvisions does it. At least he did a post some time back, could have been a one off.

well for me it is likely going to be a one off since as far as I know those things aren't just everywhere. It was good fun though... it might be a tourist thing. beats me!

Could be.. My thinking is that it's a hipster thing. Urban lumberjacks.

lol, i would imagine in USA it probably is. I can see it now, bunch of people with man buns and carefully manicured beards enjoying an ironic PBR (in a glass) and throwing axes in a Gucci $400 flannel.

haha yeah, exactly. And leather restored boots from the 1800s.

That sounds great sir gooddream! I've never been to one but then I don't really go to bars. In fact there are none in this part of Texas. But I've heard of these and I love the idea, I'm kind of surprised that it was that easy to master. No wonder they're so popular!

We have a raceway close by and they have an axe throwing bar. Keep thinking about trying it then loose interest in it. Maybe if there was a big group of friends going. Maybe. You said it was fun though. I’ll re think it but I am pretty sure it’s more than 5$ here. Lol.

The table sign says great for team building! Or team downsizing if necessary I suppose. Hahaha. Just kidding obviously 🙄
