Dutch mint solves a mistery

in #steemsilvergold8 years ago (edited)

Dear Stackers,

This is once more the 2018 proof lion dollar :

Silver collectors noticed that there is a mintmark (at 3 o'clock) which under a loop says .925. The coin however is a .999 pure silver coin which is also written on the coin. (at 6 o'clock)

So I volunteered to contact the Dutch Royal Mint to get this sorted out.

The answer came quick and was simple.

  1. The Dutch Law prescribes the Mint to put a purity mintmark on special issue proof coins. The mintmarks are officially designed for this purpose.
  2. They do not have a mintmark higher than 925 so decided to use this one.

The lady of the Mint emphasized once more that the coin really is .999 and not .925.

Issue solved!

Goldrooster

The mint is located in Utrecht where coins are struck since 1567!
