Drive on or sell ?

What is the best moment to buy a new car and sell your old one?

In the Netherlands car dealers almost always take in your old car and if it is not their brand they make a call to another dealer before they give you a verbal price.

Her is our present car, a Toyota RAV4 X-style. Getting 8 years old in August.

The issue now is that te car has some very deep scratches on the left and front and soem damage on the right side.

scratches caused by ???

My Toyota dealer already told me that the take in price is gonna suffer badly due to these scratches and other damage and I estimate this on 3000 EUR maybe. So instead of maybe 12 K I get back 9 K. The same car brand new would cost us some 35 K.

So what would you do ? Continue a few years or sell it. I am making up my mind this year. When you are retired like me these decissions are becoming more important I notice.

Try to sell it privately yourself. Anything you get over 9K is extra

This is the way to go. It may take a little more time and effort but you make that extra instead of the dealer getting it.

My 2005 suburban with no rocker panels and rust holes in the rear quarter panels says drive on.

Then again I love that old black beauty and mechanically it's a champ, I think I can get another 5-7 years or 85k more miles before I will consider letting it go. The cost of repair is tiny compared to the cost of depreciation. Almost every depreciation table I have seen is you lose 50% of the purchase price to depreciation in 4 years....
