Ulog 97: And The Results Are... DON'T DRINK THE WATER!
About a month ago as we were strolling through a big box store enjoying the gardening section, I happened upon a display with these at-home water test kits. They were free, so I figured, why not...
Not to be the Debbie Downer of the group, Mr Golden D said not to do as all they want is to sell you some kind of water filtration system or water softener set-up.
So me being me, I ignored his rant and sent out the water sample.
I was expecting a letter in the mail with the reading and results, but much to my surprise, I just hung up the phone with the company and got the results.
GUESS WHAT? Don't drink the water!!
It is NOT quality drinking water!
Now it's no where near as bad as the water in Flint, Michigan- which really isn't too far from us, but still... I'm concerned enough to be calling the township; as we are on municipality water and sewage systems.
Since we moved here in February 2017, we have not drank water straight from the tap; we usually buy bottled water and use a pitcher filtration system.
Things We Do Use Water For From The Tap:
- Giving the dog water
- Watering the garden
- Making ice cubes
- Making coffee
- Cooking
So now I'm thinking what the heck are we doing and what are we putting into our bodies!!
Our Water Test Results
- Hard Water- 3-grains per gallon - soft water is 0-1 grains per gallon- we have moderately hard water
- TDS- 117-parts per million - 50 parts per million is considered safe for drinking (Ummm, we're double that!)
So now I will be looking into ways to treat the water, contact the local township water board and invest in even more bottled water.
What has this world come to? It is so polluted that we can't even drink what we once thought was safe water?

Here, we can never drink from the tap, I buy bottled water too...
We drink bottled spring water, but as @walkerland said... the hauling of the gallons, etc becomes cumbersome
I totally know what you mean by the heavy lifting!
having top buy and rely on bottled water seems really unsustainable (not to mention all that heavy lifting). Have you tried the big berkey water filter system? We've been using one for years and its a really reliable product. Ours sits beside the sink so it's super quick and easy to fill up.
I am definitely going to check into purchasing one. We rarely buy gifts for each other here; usually when we make a big purchase it's for the house that we both benefit from and this is definitely in that category.
Yeah, that's why as soon as we were able, we bought a 6 gallon Berkey and use it for ANY water that we cook with or drink. We also bought the shower head...
I've heard of the Berkey and am wondering if I need to check into them. I don't want a Culligan bottle water system here- don't want to rely on delivery person.
Berkeys are pricey, but our water quality has deteriorated since we moved here in 1983 and this was just the system for us.
For fun try sending in your bottled water. Hardly regulated.

I actually have a tds meter and my tap water is around 20 to 30. If I use my 3 stage counter top water filter I don't get a reading. It was 200 dollars included a year of filters. I could go for a 6 stage one with uv and wifi (lol), etc, but I don't get my water from a brackish swamp so I am good.
