Thanks for joining steemit. New users not welcome! (At least that's how it feels)
So I joined steemit a couple weeks ago. I like the idea of getting rewards for essentially the same activities I would be doing on facebook. And while there are plenty of friendly people willing to help out the newbies, there seem to be some people here that just don't want to see new people doing well. I made a couple posts not really expecting to make anything, just experimenting with the platform a bit. I got one post to a penny .01 USD and someone downvoted me. Seriously!? the new guy with a one penny post needs to be downvoted so he doesn't earn an author reward? Makes me wonder how anybody gets ANY kind of a start on this platform. I see a lot of posts about "greedy whales" and how posts get downvoted because "there are only 7 dollars in the prize pool and the whales and guilds need 5 of it**. I brushed off those posts, being new and not really knowing the whole story. But now i have seen it first hand and it seems kinda accurate. I'm not upset about not getting a penny, it's the principle of the thing. The rich step on the poor to keep them down so they can get richer. Whatever guys. Sigh.
Okay. I'm done with my rant. I'm just going to keep at it, like I said, I like the idea of this platform, but it seems the only way I am going to be able to make anything from steem is if I put my hard earned cash into it, because clearly the ocean just isn't big enough for the whales to let little fish like me swim freely.

Haters gonna hate. Don't mind the flags. No one wanted to take your penny. Whales flag on very rare occasions, and actually very few of them flag. There are instances where you might get flagged for getting an unrealistic huge reward. I don't think this is the chase with you.
Write good content and slowly you will gain your followers.

dont give up on steemit just yet I see you got your rep to 38 thats a great start, but dont expect to be rolling in money either it takes alot of time and work unless your extremely lucky. oh and upvoted!
I'm not expecting to get rich. And i plan on keeping at it. It's just that I see people complaining about the lack of new users and how a lot of the users already here are leaving or giving up on steem. This seems to be why. Lol. New users can't seem to catch a break, unless struck by the lucky lightning bolt. My brother @justinashby got one of our co-workers to join steem a couple days ago. He made one post about doing drugs and made multiple followers, 40 rep, and more rewards on his first post than I have made since I started. I'm not really angry, just kinda discouraged. I was hoping to find a more inteligent crowd here, not a group of thug whales who reward those who pander to the muddled masses. "Hehehe 'drugs' now pay me" just seems like the opposite of what I joined steem for.
That's why we need more new users. Without users, there is no diversity (in contents and among readers). It is the chicken and egg problem.
I dont think getting new users should be our focus but keeping the ones we have, I know what you mean I also seen people start later then me and get rewarded crazy amounts for posting a single picture, video or link, while I have been struck with luck a few times they seem abit far inbetween, would be nice to be getting 0.75 roughly on each post. Yea its a little odd what gets rewarded sometimes all I would say is I wouldn't mind but think the rewards should be spread a little more.
I was here in the alpha phase, but lost my keys -_- Now that I came "back" a month or two ago, I felt nothing but happy with the community here.... I don't know where yall are coming from, or what kind of expectations you have.
