Confessions of an art major

in #busy6 years ago (edited)

I was an art student, but now I am an artist without a degree. The beginning of this statement is a confession in itself, for I find it embarrassing to admit that I was a liberal arts major when I proudly abandoned university without a degree after studying and working for almost two years. I do not consider this a bad thing, the product was not worth what was being asked of me at the time and I had serious doubts about the quality of the education. When I was there my mission was to learn as much as possible and I had already seen the power of knowledge to be greater than any institutional accreditation.

"There isn't anything a man can't learn to do well in half a day" -Orson Wells

Listening to this interview is gold for an artist trying to reach the deep heart of American culture in the 21st century.

While in college I watched in horror as the institution began to replicate the very anarchist ideology I experienced as a youth growing up in Los Angeles and used the fundamentally anarchist principals of individualism to support a collectively tyrannical government. They planted the seeds of capitalistic profit at every turn, we were not allowed to write by hand but only on computers. We were forced to sign up for facebook in order to receive credit for classes in the then infancy of the company. At night I worked until 2 AM or later whenever I could washing dishes to support myself.

In the end no Individual can support the proper delusions required to fight the anti-capitalist posturing structure of government education that is passed off as a unique product of talent and intelligence in America. I quickly discovered, and have come to the conclusion after many years of hard work, that the anarchist philosophy or hippie philosophy of a general begrudgment of money (Money as defined as the collective power of a nation's citizens) and those who earn it will get you no where in a capitalist controlled nation. As an art student I refused all offers to buy my work holding out for that special gallery appearance that would never come.

I received grades and inspiration in every subject up until the point when I began to be overcome by the radicalism of the doctrine of individualism and class warfare preached by this institution and switched to becoming an art major. Barak Obama had just been elected president, I was too young to vote at the time and I remember feeling left out. Despite the fact that my vote would not have counted due to being cast in California I remember it as the first time I wanted to have a legitimate say in American politics. There was a sense of joy everywhere that things were finally changing for the better in American culture and it was all being made possible by a new youthful and rebellious spirit. I thought that there was hope for my future but I had the same expectations of government overreach and the ongoing wars that have been fought ever since I first could look at a television.

Writing is now considered an art, the news was new to me but it rings pleasantly in my ears. I have long considered an artist as a profession one dedicates their life to, and specifically one kind of art as well. It seems I have long been left out of my own vocabulary because the now socially accepted critic terms an artist to refer to an individual. In that case I am an artist, go see #f for yourself, this is the art that I believe is best suited for American culture in its present form. I have much more art completed to show you, we are not caught up to the present day, however, this is a start. I will continue doing my art in written form exclusively with steem. Until then, language seems to be the best way to express what I have been feeling in the last decade.
