Weekend Freewrite - The Conversation
I can't figure out how to put the prompts in bold, so I will list them here for anyone not familiar with the freewrite concept.
- Can I change the three big lies...
- Next week our daughter is moving, I am almost ready to admit defeat.
- Boiling it all down
“Can I change the three big lies we tell about ourselves?” She asked. He shrugged as though he wasn't really listening. “What lies would those be,” he wanted to know? She said, “For one, that we know what the hell we're doing. We try to pretend that the horse meat business is somehow intuitively knowable, but you know as well as I do that the pet food market is moving towards vegan. Even dogs are supposed to have a conscience these days. Second, that we're even a little bit happy with each other. You mother was right when she said we should never have gotten married. And third, that the protesters outside the office right now are going to get bored and wander off if we just decide to stay in here and ignore them. Apparently butchering horses to feed people's dogs is just a bridge too far, and we will have to rethink our whole strategy. Maybe if we point out that the horses themselves are vegan they won't mind so much. By the way, I want a divorce.” He looked at her out of the corner of his eye and smirked.
“Next week, our daughter is moving. I am almost ready to admit defeat. I know she's 32 and more than ready to be on her own, but I can't help feeling guilty about how much we have damaged her with all our fighting. We spent a fortune on all those years of horseback riding lessons and then we decided to feed the horses to the dogs when they got too old to ride! How were we supposed to know that our business would grow from that? And how were we supposed to predict that our daughter would blame us and try to sue us for all her therapy bills? She just has a mind of her own, I guess. Maybe her new venture will be less stressful than living with the “horse murderers.” I can't believe she called us that. I thought we were being so eco-conscious, not letting the old horses go to waste. Who knew this was going to be the thing that turned her against us forever? I give up. We're too old to have another baby and try again not to screw it up. It seems like everything we do is wrong, including our marriage. So let's just cut our losses and go. We don't need the stress.”
He finally gave her his full attention. “You really want to get divorced just because our daughter is moving out? What good would that do at this point?” She glared down her nose at his utter obtuseness. “Because”, she said icily, “I think we've hit a wall. Don't you? Boiling it all down to the nitty-gritty, you were never really in love with me OR the horse meat business. You just want to go parasailing and pretend everything is daisies and sunshine. When is the last time you hung out on the slaughter floor and actually did any work?” He grimaced at her derisively. “Well, sweetie, I guess since you've been right about absolutely everything in our entire lives together, there's no reason for me to disagree with you now. I will pack a bag and be out of the house by morning. At least I hope I will.” She looked askance at him, wondering what that last cryptic sentence was supposed to mean. He nodded toward the office window. “The protesters have broken the front door down. I guess they will be on their way up here by now. Maybe we should make our way to the helipad and get the hell out of here.”
An entertaining little tale and seamless inclusion of the three prompts. Well done you.
Thanks so much!

Ha. I hope they made it out. Or not. Can't decide ;)
This reminded me the time when I was a kid and dad made us eat horse meat... it was horrible! I felt horrible! Kind of a traumatic experience! :(
That's awful! I'm sorry I dragged that memory back up!

No worries, my dad learned that day to never forced us to eat the things we don't like heheheh
The prompts flowed into each other
Enjoyed the story :)
Anyways here's the next Prompt
Love it! the pet food market is moving towards vegan. Even dogs are supposed to have a conscience these days. And your dialogue is perfect, and startling, and delivered impeccably. Especially lines like this (deadpan): "....you were never really in love with me OR the horse meat business. ... When is the last time you hung out on the slaughter floor and actually did any work?”
My snipping tool isn't working tonight on my pc, or I'd show you how to do bold and italic. Or you could look for this Markdown Styling Guide icon when you're composing a post or a reply. Or click on the one I just provided, scroll down, look for the instructions on using * one asterisk for italics * and ** two for bold** and ***three for bold ital ***.
Forgot to say how much I love this too:
Who knew this was going to be the thing that turned her against us forever? I give up. We're too old to have another baby and try again not to screw it up. It seems like everything we do is wrong, including our marriage.
And to get bold headers bigger than you get with **, use hashtags - one hashtag is the bittest. Unlike the asterisks, you need a space between # hashtag + header.
It's so ridiculous. Word Press made formatting soooo much easier.
Except when it comes to inserting images.
There are so many great lines in this! @carolkean already mentioned two of the ones that stood out for me, so here are a couple more:
You just want to go parasailing and pretend everything is daisies and sunshine. When is the last time you hung out on the slaughter floor and actually did any work?”
She looked askance at him, wondering what that last cryptic sentence was supposed to mean. I love when you weave your own surprise at what you have written into your stories. You are a master at that.
To bold, I use two asterisks at the beginning and the end of the bit I want bolded. Can't have any spaces at the beginning or end, though. For italics, just use one asterisk beginning and end. Look at me! Telling people how to format!
Thanks for the kind words and the tutorial! I will play with that and see if I can make it work.

I haven't read this, but maybe this will help.

That's great! This stuff is not intuitive to me. I'm a farmer, not a formatter!
