How to make a COM port tester

in #howto8 years ago (edited)

Greetings! I want to continue the topic of electronics and useful things. At work, I needed a COM (RS-232) port tester. This is relevant for me, because there are a lot of equipment (scales and analytical instruments) working through this interface. One of the problems is the failure of the COM port (as a result of incorrect actions of maintenance personnel or static discharges). To solve this problem I found on the Internet a program and a scheme for testing.

From the beginning it is necessary to make Loopback-stub. I bought the DB-9 (female) connector.

We connect the contacts according to the scheme:
2 to 3, 1-4-6, 7-8-9

I soldered like this.

Then I collected everything in the case.

Connect the Loopback-stub to the COM port. Then download the free program WinSSD (Windows Sealevel Serial Diagnostics). The Windows Sealevel Serial Diagnostics utility is designed to test serial ports in the Microsoft Windows operating system environment. In addition to standard COM ports, the utility supports virtual ports implemented with USB-to-UART controllers.

Run the program...

Select the desired COM port and click "open".

If necessary, go to the "settings". Go to the tab "Loopback".

"Start". Successfully passed 3 tests: Pattren, ASCII, Modem Control.

Then go to the tab "BERT". This is a test "Bit error Rate".

Thanks to this, I tested the COM port in various modes of operation. I hope this information will be useful =)

With the best wishes, @gleb-jeglov aka Evgeny

This is some useful old-school nitty-gritty computer how-to info. If I ever need to test a COM port, this is it right here. I have saved this post as a PDF on my laptop already 👍

Thank you! In the laboratory where I work, there are still many devices working through the COM port. I'm glad that the information was useful for you =)

So this will echo out what we send over COM back to our PC?
