The Ghost city is a handcut collage series inspired by my hometown Thessaloniki. It was founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon. An important metropolis by the Roman period, Thessaloniki was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire. It was conquered by the Ottomans in 1430, and passed from the Ottoman Empire to Greece on November 8, 1912. Ever since it became a multicultural city where Jewish Ottoman Franks and Greeks lived in harmony. You can still see the marks of these different cultures like ghosts from far past in a modern city. This feeling i tried to recreate in this collage series. All of the photos are taken from the city's archive and are from the 20's 30's and 40's. Their size is 50/35cm.

Very interesting work, i like your choice in a block background colour too.

Thank you, i love those striking pure colours combined with black and white photos:)

Amazing vintage images to begin with ~ And what you have brought to them is a sense of timelessness and intrigue.

The photos are from Thessaloniki's digital archive, it has a vast amount of them and from different eras:)

It's interesting how you can see the cuts, the tiny shadows around the cuts, unlike your other work. Were these older projects? It's like the no 1 thing I couldn't get when I tried to mentally process how you make these, I was like "why can't I see the cuts!" I now realize it's much like an optical illusion.

These are some of my older artworks, you can see the cuts there because of the striking coloured font. I also use a 220gr paper which is very thick and is standing out. That's why you see these little shadows:)
