Daily Field Notes #15

in #geopolis8 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the fifteenth Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. Upvotes are currently worth more than $1,50 so don't hesitate to get involved or become a member for higher rewards! You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Subjects curated by Geopolis are Geography, Anthropology, Ecology, Geology and certain branches of History.

Ecology: Plastic waste in the ocean has been found to have a twentyfold increase of disease in corals; adding one more threat to the list of things that could potentially kill corals

Most of us might know that the increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the corresponding acidification of the oceans cause corals to bleach, but apparently our plastic waste also causes a significant increase in the diseases observed in coral reefs, further putting stress on the fragile ecosystems. You can read everything about it in @valth's post.

Original Post

Corals and coral reefs have having a pretty difficult time with coping with the alternations we human make to the environment. They have already shown to have a lot of problem coping with the increased temperature in the water, as well as problems with dealing with the ocean acidification. This has lead to a very high rate of coral bleaching all over the world, and many reefs that are located in warmer parts of the ocean is dying rapidly.

Geology: What I Learned In Class -Photo Geology And How It Helps In The Interpretation Of Geologic Features On The Ground.

Did you know geologist have their own 3D goggles?! I think they are way cooler than any 3D movie but hey, that's just my opinion. If you want to know why it is used, make sure to read @hornblende's post about it

Studying Geology is really exciting because you get to go on field trips and interact with those things you have learned in class. Everything becomes real to you as you can relate what you have learned in class to what you will see in reality. Let me get back to the main purpose of this post.

I will be talking about what I learned today in class. It was really interesting, so I decided to share it with everyone. I learned about Photo Geology and how it helps in the interpretation of geologic features on the ground.

Geography: Muir Woods National Monument

Do you want a new destination for your next trip? Maybe the Muir woods are something for you. You can already start by learning about the Topography and history of the monument thanks to @eaglespirit.

If there is one forest that I love the most, then that would be Muir Woods. Granted I have not visited every single forest in the world, but I have visited many. One of the reasons I am attracted to this area is most likely that I was born a mere 15 miles away.

The area is rich with history and conservation and it is only through efforts of the community over centuries that have kept Muir Woods pure. The area was home to the First Nation Miwok tribe over 10,000 years ago, and Muir Woods continues to hold Native American ceremonies throughout the year to this day. Interestingly, the oldest shell material found on Muir Woods land is dated back to 150 AD.

History: The Nigerian civil war

Some of us might be familiar with the atrocities that happened in certain African regions during the 20th century, but without knowing actual stories and greater details. @jamesmovic wrote about one of these, specifically the Nigerian civil war and it certainly is worth to read.

Original Post

The Nigeria civil war also known to be the Biafra war which kick started on the 6th of July 1967 and ended on the 15th of January 1970, was a war fought by Nigeria against the Biafra to resist the breach of the Biafra from the republic of Nigeria. This was as a result of the igbos who felt they could no longer relate with the northerners dominating them at the level of the federal government and saw secession as the only key to survive and to avoid being eliminated.
