Porsche's 718 Cayman GT4 sharpens its flat-six

in #cars6 years ago

Produced for a limited time, the Cayman GT4's first name never really saw its rating drop. But his successor is now actively preparing, and he should keep a recipe and appearance very close.

Like the 911 GT3, the Cayman GT4 has earned its name from a category in vogue in competition. And like his big sister, this little coupe has had some success, despite a salty price. Porsche did not hesitate a long time before deciding to give it a succession, based on the "718" released in 2016. But this time, the difference with the S or GTS versions is even more pronounced. Like the future Boxster Spyder, this radical variant should indeed be the only one in the range to keep a flat six-cylinder flat. Some rumors even speak of the use of a deflated version of the big 4.0 of the current 911 GT3, with nearly 400 ch to the key. The sound thus promises to be more melodious than that of the controversial flat-four used on other declensions.

A look always rather light

As our photos of a little camouflaged prototype show, the look of this 718 Cayman GT4 will remain close to that of its predecessor. We will find an enlarged rear axle, a large fixed fin openwork, a front shield generously ventilated or a hearing at the base of the front cover. The difference with the first generation will come mainly from front or rear optics. The rear-wheel drive will remain, they de rigueur, as well as optimized chassis settings to venture frequently on the circuit. This 718 Cayman GT4 seems to have everything on his side to be as popular as the one he replaces, especially as a Clubsport version dedicated to the track will remain in the program.

Like its predecessor, the 718 Cayman will be available in a more radical GT4 version.
