ABODES OF POVERTY
The sentinel's eyes are fixed from their enclaves
In portraits, clinging obdurate to wearied walls
Staring into emptiness and dank silence
Of the abodes of poverty.
In surgical colonnades
Are outlined ribs, carved expertly
By hunger and naught.
What scares away the bedbugs
And the rats, and the mosquitoes?
But a desolate house.
Into the palm the whitened head sinks
Thoughts slitherering in its labyrinthine maze
Plunging into nothingness
All beneath the stare of the sentinel eyes.
The sentinel's eyes once belonged to his parents
Now they haunt him from portraits, hefted upon walls
Of the inherited abode, belonging to poverty
With teary eyes he's a sole heir
To the abodes of poverty.
