On A Smoke-filled, Late Summer's Day

IMG_8504.JPG

There's not a cloud in the sky today, all that gray is smoke!

To say that it is smokey outside today is an understatement. It feels like half the USA is flooded or soon shall be and the other half is up in smoke. Not that I am complaining, as I am a bit of a Pollyanna when it comes to life situations, things can always be worse. There are a lot of folks out there who are suffering more than a bit of life inconvenience right now, and I just keep trying to do what bits I can to help improve any fellow human's situation who has suffered in the misery and drudgery departments.

That said, since it is unhealthy to be outside according to the air quality index, I am finding myself spending the day indoors. Other than being robbed from the opportunity to start my young gelding's equitation education, I have no shortage of in the house things to do.

Why, just in the AM hours alone I paid all my monthly bills, administered a standardized test, spent an hour on the phone with my father who was sitting on the top of some mountain in Alaska, planned half a year's worth of school work, and ordered a new freezer. Who knows what delights this afternoon will bring.

I always like to hear about future shows, books, or events in areas that I am interested in, and as I sat on my bed today surrounded by a sea of organizational paperwork of both the physical and digital variety, I thought, hmmm GK, why not give your followers a little preview of some of the things you are going to share with them. Like all ideas, it needs some refining and testing to see if it is useful or idiotic. So here I am, hanging out my pre-done, blog-laundry:

Canning Cornucopia!

IMG_8512.JPG

September and October are canning months round here. There will be posts on turning the home canned grape juice that my friend gave me into grape jelly. This has to be done, for there is a young Hawaiian football player that is like a PBandJ-eating plague upon my house.

I will also be canning chili, applesauce, salsa, tomatoes, pumpkin, potatoes, chicken soup stock, and jam over the next few weeks. I have a few tricks and ideas that I feel need to be shared. An added bonus will be my inevitable "oops" moments. I live to entertain you all!

Harvest Time Posts-a-plenty

My husband is building a cider press, so I will totally be doing a series on the construction of that tool, not to mention showing off the end result of its utilization. Yum!

Fall soil prep is another series of posts that I am going to present, for I feel like feeding your soil in the fall is a no brainer. You'd feed a racehorse well after a big derby. Same concept. There will be compost and cover crop pictures galore!

I have a whole bunch of recipes that I have been working on: Lavender Blueberry Scones, Nobby Apple Cake, curried pumpkin in the crockpot, dutch oven cobblers, sourdough bread in the outdoor oven, etc...Lots and lots of cooking happens in the fall around here, and I plan on sharing it with you all!

There also needs to be some weeding and organizing done on @generikat's shelf, some more Ramblings With Ron's, a series on training a young horse, and in all probability a sprinkling of random GK weirdness whenever the fancy strikes me.

This summer it was difficult at times to keep up with daily blog posts, and I am so thankful to you all for hanging with me. I really do enjoy our social interactions, and if you have any topic suggestions that you would like to see me ruminate and wax phonetically on, please do share. Ya'll are adored!

Hopefully my blog will have more posts this fall than my yard has leaves!

And as always, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's "Now with authentic smoke-scent" iPhone.

nice shots...the autumn is coming...Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower

Oh, I so agree! I love all the colors of fall, and thank you so much for the nice comment!

All this smoke is cutting into my bike riding, that's for sure. They say it's better to not do anything, than breathe hard in it. Good enough for me, I'll stay in then.
I can relate to the lack of getting it done on here. And now I will be offline for a couple of weeks again. So will get back to 'normal' things then. Life does get busy now and then. Have a nice night, and stay out of the haze, if possible.

Oh NOES! The bike riding is being affected! I'm sorry dd, I feel rather caged right now myself. Day four of being stuck inside has commenced.

You are going to be gone for awhile, I sure hope you are having fun and enjoying yourself during that time! Hope you are having a marvelous day my friend!

oh so that's why the atmosphere looks like that the air quality also not good take care :) BTW nice shot's

Thanks! It's pretty ugly, I feel for the firefighters and all those impacted by it!

Oh I really know what its like to some extent. In the fall, the folks all around the lake burn leaves (except for me lol) For some reason the smoke just usually hangs in the air waiting to chock any person that ventures outdoor. I will have to get some good photos of it this year to share lol.

I can't wait to see those photos! A deciduous smoke blanket! Smoke anywhere but here would be an added bonus right now, we are not even supposed to go outside!

Looking forward to your fall posts. Round these parts the fall festivals get going in late October and it's lots of fun, my favorite time of the year.🐓

I love fall festivals! Can't wait to see some of those posts!😉

I don't do nearly as much canning as I used to do when all of my children were home to help and to eat, but I look forward to your tips and recipes! (Today I canned beets. What a messy job that is. Glad I'm done!)

Ooh! I love canned beets, especially pickled beets! I imagine that you have more tips than I do, but I will do my best😊

Wel done my dear friend @generikat
