It's Snowtastic!

Just A Little Dusting With Nature's Powdered Sugar

IMG_4085.JPG

Well it finally happened, we got snowed on. Our first snow is at least a couple of weeks late this year, which is interesting, and by interesting I mean the lateness is appreciated, for I got an extra couple of weeks to put everything away on the farm.

To be honest, I was a touch apprehensive about the first snow of the season, as we have a ton of new people in these parts. Most of the imports have moved from an area that doesn't get enough rain, let alone snow, so their driving in inclement weather skills are a bit wanting. Not long after the first flakes began to fall yesterday did the text alerts start flowing in about accidents a plenty.

Then again, people driving too fast in the atmosphere glitter is not an uncommon thing around here. Last winter our first influx of imports didn't seem to be able to stay on the road every time we got a fresh round of snow, and their presence has increased ten fold over the summer. I have to teach a yogurt class at the library today and I am both curious and hesitant to see the snow carnage on the roads.

Thoughts of future road hazards aside, there is something special about the first snow of the year. I stood on my porch last evening and snapped the above picture of my backyard. The whole scene was silent and serene.

Then my kids let our two heathens out. Lani and Cora are our two pups, and last night was their first snow. The cowboy corgi, Cora, let loose with a series of barrel rolls and spins that would have impressed a stunt pilot, and Lani, the hound German Shepherd spent most of her time with her nose in the snow. When she looked up she usually had a snow-capped peak of a proboscis. It was kinda cute.

Back and forth the puppers raced around our farm, snapping at falling snow flakes, trying to catch snowballs as the kids threw them, and occasionally ramming into the side of things when they got going too fast and blew a turn. Their snow joy reminded me of how excited I used to get when it snowed when I was a small fry. This joy has evaporated a touch thanks to all of the snow-tasks that adulting brings to one's life. Awesome things like putting the snow tires on the car, making sure the tractor is plugged in so its block is nice and toasty when I need to go plow, getting out winter clothing, and the list goes on.

And that moment of reflection got me to thinking. When was the last time I had ran out into the freshly fallen snow and made a snow angel or caught snowflakes with my tongue? Most of my snow angels end of looking like a snow sumo wrestler, but you all get the idea I am sure. It's so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind that is being responsible and taking care of 'tings all the time that you can forget to just enjoy the moment. I took an opportunity of snow-joyment and chucked a snowball at my son. You gotta start somewhere.😉

Moral of the story: Take the time to pelt the children with snow projectiles, it's good for the soul!

Hmm, since we have no kids as of yet, perhaps my wife will receive said projectiles. Excuse me for a minute my friend. ;)

Ha! I hope you are still with us Lydon 🤣🤣🤣

You like to live dangerously, sir!

I approve.

There may be a tense change if he followed through with his aim. Heh.

I am never a big fan of snow, but I used to like it...extra heavy so school would be canceled LOL.

I agree with you on the sentiment that adulating seems to steal the joy out of most everything! I like your idea of living in the moment. I have to stop myself sometimes and remember to enjoy the now! I am fighting to never grow up, even if I grow old lol.

Ah yes, the amount of snowfall needed for a school cancellation was always wished for, ha ha!

You know, the Impish Elder Club is going to have some seriously fun folks in it. Reminds me of a line from the movie Galaxy Quest, altered to fit my mentality of course, Never Grow Up, Never Surrender! LOL

I certainly hope your aim was good with that son-intended snowball. (But don't tell him I said that.)

The aim was true, and your sentiment wasn't uttered in his presence, lol!

You could have been my mother!! She would do the unthinkable and lob a snowball at one of her 9 kids just for grins.

Seriously.

She never did grow up or old and was always one of the kids, except when she needed to be the mom. I'm so glad to hear you are fighting the urge. I'm not sure I will ever grow up although someday, I am sure I may grow old. But, by then I will be too senile to realize it. Hehehehehe.

I hope you popped him well with your aim. You only get one surprise shot! :)

Egads! 9 children! Your mom is a-ma-zing!

I love the idea of never growing up but still momming on demand, that totally sounds like my jam. I've always been rather old in the soul way, responsible and all that, but I love to get into a bit of whimsy caused mischief. I blame it on my dad, lol!

Thank you so much for the tip and another one of your most excellent comments, I feel spoiled!

Your poor dad!!! :)

Now, speaking of never growing up....

I think life should be lived in the land of whimsy! Otherwise, it would be like living in my grandmothers time, where you got old and responsible by the time you had your first baby, or thirty... whichever came first. Yuck!

I enjoyed your first snow post.

I too loved the snow to the point of giddiness when seeing it first start to fall as a child. As an adult who detests driving in it, it's a love/hate thing. My eyes, heart & soul still love to see it falling, but the adult side of me dreads it a little.

Glad you decided to live in the moment and enjoy some snowball fun !

Awe, thank you! I am too glad that you enjoyed the snow ramblings.:)

Here lately I have had a metaphorical burr in my mental saddle over the fact that I used to be such an awe-eyed infant when it came to the joy of the little things in life, yet as of late I have been so burdened in the adult side of to do drudgery that I have been a little bit crotchety in the enjoy the small things compartment. Your love/hate sentiment regarding the snow makes so much sense when it comes to a lot of things.

I hope you had the very best weekend!!!

Ah, the reactions to snow. It seems people either continue to drive 10 mph over the speed limit, or drive 10 mph period. This weather happens every year, and yet the tire tracks on unplowed roads yesterday indicated people were fishtailing and hitting the ditch all over the place over an inch of white stuff.

If anything, the yearly falling of the snow serves as a reminder that some folks memory's are fleeting and about as retentive as their ability to stay on the road after the first snowstorm of the season. No wonder history repeats itself!
