The Story of the Fourth Wiseman

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany or more commonly known as the Feast of the Three Kings. They were not really kings but wise men who studied astrology and predicted the time when a great king will be born. At the approximate time of the birth the 3 men searched the skies for a sign and a star appeared and guided them to the place where the great king was to be born. There they saw the babe in the manger and offered homage and gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. I wanted to post something about today's feast and lo and behold, an article suddenly popped up on my FB which I believe is the perfect one to share with you on this special day.

This article shared in my FB today is a novel about a certain Artaban (depicted in image above) who lived in ancient Persia and was called the Other Wiseman or the Fourth Wiseman. It was written by Henry Van Dyke, an American author, educator and clergyman, born in 1852 in Germantown, Pennsylvania and first published in 1895. It is a work of fiction yet the story made a very profound impression on me and just made my resolve in my efforts at being good. Some of you, like me, may have never read this and I wouldn't want you to miss out on this beautiful story.

Artaban's life and his quest to find the King is a true inspiration to those who want to live a life worthy of the kingdom of God. He sold all his possessions in order to offer as gifts to this King and yet his compassion for others had caused him to miss out in seeing the new born baby with his 3 other magi friends, had caused him to give up all his possessions intended for the King for the sake of his fellowmen, and had caused him to continue his search for this King for 33 years. Yet he never waivered in giving Love, Charity, and Compassion to others even if it meant being unable to meet this King. Never did he stop to think of his own desires and needs when it came to helping others.
