Halloween Self Portrait

Well Hello fellow Steemians,

Just in time for the Holiday I tried out something different.

A Self Portrait done in crayon on black background.

It makes the colours pop but it also (at least in my case) made me look pretty creepy.

I swear I'm not that weird in real life !

The way you go about it is practically reversed from normal drawing as the black already provides you with the darkest shadows.
Whereas you normally use the white of the paper as your highlight.

So you first put down the mid tone in a light Ocre or Burnt Siena colour after lightly sketching the main features in.

This will cover a lot of the face. Then you take another lighter colour maybe a yellow or light orange to define those mid tones a bit more.

The next step you set the highlights with white, pink and bright orange.

At this stage the portrait will look overly colourful. But this all changes in the next step when you draw the shadows in dark blue and purple. With that you can really form the features.

Make sure you get the proportions right before you put down the colour. It's almost impossible to change them later on in the drawing.

So maybe you want to try this out for yourself. Do it. It's fun.
